No power and no light in the fresh food compartment

I tried to charge the light bulb at the top compartment. I use a meter to test the power of light bulb plug and accidentally short the circuit. As a result the fresh food side has no power. Control board has no power. Freezer side is still running. What is the problem and what parts I need to replace. Thanks!

Start with a light switch. Might need a new board too.

SOURCE: Problem with fresh food side of my refrigerator freezer

The bulbs dim glow is a worry, sounds like not enough voltage is getting there. If you are comfortable with a multimeter, check what the voltage is at the bulb socket. If you have a low voltage issue due to say the transformer not working properly then the fan will also have low voltage (or no voltage). No power, no fan, no cooling. I'd suspect there are voltage issues with that transformer, especially since it's a 240 VAC model. A transformer typically steps down the 240 volts to 120 volts for light bulbs and maybe even the fans (or the whole refer). The repair man may be correct in that the transformer is built in to a circuit board but it COULD be a stand alone transformer.

SOURCE: GE side by side not very cold on fresh food side

there is one of two thing that could be going wrong here ; you may have a bad evap fan mtr and control board or yourr damper is not opening properly. i would say you have the later of the two due to the fact the rf is still making ice. one thing that causes this issue is too much weight in the door causing the door to lean and not trigger in door light switch or the switch itself is damaged. the door hinge and camm assembly can be adjusted from the bottow using a standard socket set

SOURCE: freezer is not freezing, fresh food is not cold

you have a bad defrost timer or a heatting element.mif there is ice on the rear wall you will have to empty it and remove all shelves, pull the cover and you will see the heating element. it will be in a glass tube. you can see if its burned into, look for blackness inside the glass tube. when you install the new one be sure to put it so water wont run inside the tube, or it will burn out right away. good luck you can do this sawdust46

SOURCE: Freezer is cold, main food compartment is warm

the evap fan probably stopped working because of the shorted defrost thermostat. if you remove the freezer drawer you will probably see frost build-up on the back wall. what you need to do is remove the back wall and manually defrost the coil with a hair dryer. have some towels handy. once the ice is melted you will need to replace the thermostat or this will happen again. you should buy a new thermostat before the repair so you know what you're looking for. hope this helps

Light does not come on when you open door

Test your 40 watt light bulb in another fixture if the light bulb is OK then unplug the refrigerator and open fresh food compartment and pry out the light switch. Test for continuity HERE For some reason your model shows an additional light switch on the control panel located inside the fresh food compartment above top shelf. Try switching the ligh switch on from there. Here is a Photo Click HERE Here is a replacement light switch=> Light-Switch-2149705-00557365 If you have any questions I will be here to answer them for you, Thanks Sea Breeze

Refrigerator freezing food

Ah... where is that manual when you need it! Actually, the internet is WONDERFUL for such emergencies! I found a manual on the FixYa site for you in pdf format. It will be easier to find on your computer!
Now to the soluiton...
Generally with the top freezer designs the main thermostat controls the temperature of the freezer (which should be about -18°C or 0°F and the there is a slide control that allows a metered amount of cold air to drop down into the "fresh food" compartment.
As an immediate adjustment, turn the "Fresh Food" slider down 1 number LOWER that what it is set to at the moment. Is fresh food still freezing? Then put it down another number lower.
But you should also check the temperature of the freezer compartment with some appliance thermometer... leave it in for several hours or overnight for a proper reading if you've just added food to the freezer. It should be around -18°C or 0°F If you adjust the freezer, you may have to go back and readjust the fresh food setting.
I hope this helps! Don't forget to download the digital manual!

Wont let cold air blow into the refridgetor side

If it isn't due to the fridge contents obstructing the cold air outlet in the fresh food compartment, it's probably an issue with the thermostat in the fresh food compartment or the fan(s) in the freezer compartment.

It may also be the first indication of a failed part in the defrost circuit. If the freezer compartment begins to warm over the next day or so, there may be an issue with the defrost timer, defrost terminator, or heater. Before digging around there tho, make sure the cold air openings in the fresh food compartment are not blocked.

If the fan(s) in the freezer have failed, they won't be able to blow the cold air into the fresh food area. If the thermostat failed, it will never be able to send power to the fan to cool the fresh food compartment.

Depending on your capabilities, this may or may not be a good DIY type job. Sometimes, a warm fridge / freezer is due to a refrigerant leak, and will require a licensed refrigerant tech to make repairs. Working in the tight confines of a fridge can be difficult - especially when testing components with power on.

I hope this helps - good luck!

My freezer is working but the refrigerator is not cool at all. we had a black out and it came back on then the lights went out again. since then the refrigerator is not cooling. Thank you

Good day,
If the fresh food section was O.K. then after the power failed off and on, the first thing to check is the fan motor in the freezer section. It was probably burned out. Open the freezer compartment when the machine is running, you should hear the fan running, if not, remove the back panel, and check the motor, and replace if needed.
If the fan motor is running, remove the rear panel and look for ice/frost buildup on freezer coil.
If Iced, then the defrost system has failed.
The defrost system is made up of 3 parts. The main heater, mounted across the bottom of the coil, the defrost thermostat, a small 1'' round disk mounted to the top of the coil.
Both can be tested with an ohm meter, but must be done before the coil reaches 32 degrees, or the test won't work. Both should read zero ohms
Lastly the timer or adaptive defrost control, mounted in the fresh food compartment.
Below is an excellant tutorial on defrost systems.

Kenmore ref. model#253.74879401 wont cool above 49 degrees

Good day,
Many possibilities.
1. Light stays on when door is closed. You should be able to see the lights go out just before the door closes. If not sure, remove bulbs and run machine for 12+ hours to test.
2. Defrost system failed. Frost should be apparent on the rear panel of the freezer panel. If so, remove rear rear panel and inspect for excessive frost build up.
The defrost system is made up of 3 parts. The main heater( a calrod unit similar to the bake unit in an electric range). could be burned out.
A defrost thermostat mounted on the top of the evaporator in the same compartment. Another item that can fail.
The timer ( either a standard timer or an electronic version, mounted in the top (ceiling) of the fresh food compartment.
If you have a VOM meter, and have knowledge in this area, you can test the first 2 items, but not the last.
Removing these parts and taking them to an appliance parts house for testing is the other option.

3. The fan motor in the freezer must run to supply air to the fresh food compartment. Remove freezer rear panel and inspect.

4. If everything above checks out positively, then the last item has been an issue with this machine.
Ice builds up in the supply and return air chutes. Impossible to see as a rule, and requires the machine to be unplugged, both doors left open for 24 hours.

5. Make sure freezer control is set to mid range, not the cold position. This control is a damper which shares the air from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. At it's coldest setting, it allows too little air to the fresh food compartment.

Bottom of fridge not cooling

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment. Something is restricting that air flow which causes your fresh food compartment to stay warm.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck closed, for example), the freezer will get VERY cold while the fresh food compartment will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is restricting air flow from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

Left door open while cleaning out refrigerator and top unit shut off freezer is still on what should I do

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

In your case, the door must be stuck all the way open, allowing all the cold air to be diverted into the fresh food compartment. The compressor cycle is controlled by the thermostat in the fresh food compartment and thus 'short cycles' because the fresh food compartment acheives normal temperature while the freezer is relativel warm.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck in the extreme open position, for example), the fresh food compartment will get VERY cold while the freezer will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is diverting all the cold air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel/door/flap itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

We have a ge side by side and the refrigerator is freesing stuff. the model number is GSS25X SNA BS

Is it all areas of the fresh food side that are freezing your items, or is it the drawer area?

There is a direct connection (on my GE side-by-side, at least) between the freezer compartment and the drawers in the fresh food compartment. The size of the connection is controlled with a wheel or a slider. This could contribute to freezing in that area of the fresh food compartment.

Otherwise, it could be the temp sensor(s) in the fresh food compartment. If the computer thinks the temp is too high in the fresh food compartment, it will continue to cool.

It could be a problem with the motorized door that connects the freezer compartment to the fresh food compartment, located at the top of the dividing wall between the compartment. That door should close when the temp in the fresh food compartment is cold enough. If that door mechanism has failed, is disconnected, or otherwise blocked in the open position, cold air from the freezer compartment will continue to circulate into the fresh food compartment.

Fresh food compartment not cold, light is lit when door closed

Engwah, is this the correct model number or does it start with PSS. The light should do just the opposite, off when the door is closed and on when the door is open. This could be part of the non cool problem. If this model has the mother board wich controls the refrigerator it is very possible that the defective fan motor has damaged the motherboard. This is very common in GE refrigerators. The technician will have to run some tests on the board to eliminate it...Catriver..post back.
