I've had an Insignia 37" LCD TV for 5 years. It has been 100% reliable up until today. I turned it on, and the picture is fine, but the sound is laced with extremely loud digi-noise when connected to HDMI devices! It isn't the speakers because digi-noise is different - it also happens when the TV's sound outputs are connected to different devices such as headphones or a soundbar. It happens equally through both HDMI input ports, no matter which cables are used (I have many) and no matter which sources (brand new cable DVR or blu-ray player). This could only mean that the HDMI sound decoder has gone bad, right? How involved is it to fix or replace these? Would it involve replacing the whole controller board inside the TV? And how much do repairs like this cost?

Wow it seems as though you've pretty much done all of the applicable troubleshooting for this issue. The only other thing I can advise in this case is to consider purchasing a SD card. Some Blu Ray players require a little extra memory to function properly so they come with an SD card slot. Of course no one tells you this when you buy the player but it may be the solution to your problem.

Its not a sound card but its something like that called main A/V board. If you remove the back cover of the tv you will find a large metal plate covering a board with all the inputs. Thats the one you are looking for. I have found 4 versions of the part so if you can just get me the part number off the board I can link you to the right one.
