When you print a document you can go to printer properties and select Paper Source then Tray 1 or Tray 2 before you print.
My HP printer I have white paper in Tray 1 and recycled paper in Tray 2.

SOURCE: Printing problem with HP Laserjet P2015 printer

This can be an issue with one of the faulty sensor across the printer.
Please check if you are able to print from tray 1, e.g. a configuration page.
A config page can be printed by holding the Green Button and releasing it as soon as the Triangle light comes on. This would take approx 5 secs.
If the printer is able to print from tray 1, then it could be an issue with the tray 2 pickup sensor.
Check if the tray 2 pickup sensor ( a black plastic piece to the right of the tray 2 pickup roller) is moving freely (front and back), also check if tray 2 pickup roller is not able to rotate completely.

If the tray 2 sensor is not moving freely and of the pickup roller is rotating completely, then reseat the pickup roller.

Normal use with good media causes wear resulting in the need to periodically clean or replace the pickup roller. Additionally, the use of poor media might require more frequent replacement of the pickup roller. Replacing the pickup roller Complete the following to replace the pickup roller:

CAUTION: Failure to complete this procedure might damage the printer. Unplug the power cord from the printer, and allow the printer to cool.

SOURCE: HP 6180 Printing Problems

Are you getting the paper mismatch error message?
If yes, see below...
I will ignore the normal solutions to a "paper mismatch" error such as your settings not matching your printing media. Obviously, check these first:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com

If your problem is not solved with the above steps, you have an issue with your "spot sensor" and it needs to be calibrated. Instructions:

1. Press * and # at the same time, and then release both keys.
The display reads "Enter Special Key Combo".
2. Press 3, 2, and then 9, releasing each key before pressing the next.
The display window should read "Service: R0622M" with a revision number.
3. Press the right arrow button once.
The display should read "System Configuration".
4. Press Enter or OK.
5. You will be prompted to enter serial number. Do not enter any information
on the unit.
Press the right arrow button until "media sense calibration" appears in the
display.
6. Load Paper into the unit and then press Enter or OK.
7. Media Sense Calibration process will take place.

SOURCE: hP officejet wireless 6500 printer won't print

Yes I will tell you why Kodak photo paper is a little thicker in size and you should not get this same error message if you use hp photo paper or regular photo paper.See of this helps.....

Issue The Out of Paper message appears on the computer and the product stops picking up or feeding paper. Solution Step one: Reset the product

  1. Without turning the product off, remove the power cord from the back of the product.
  2. Wait 30 seconds and then plug the power cord into the back of the product.
  3. If the product is not already on, use the On button to turn it on.
Step two: Check the condition of the paper and reload it
  1. Replace any paper that is ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent.
  2. Make sure that all the paper is the same size and type. Because only one type of paper can be used in the product at a time, paper types should never be mixed.
  3. Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
  4. Make sure that the stack of paper to be loaded in the product contains no fewer than 10 and no more than 25 sheets of paper.
NOTE: Do not load too much paper in the product.
  5. Insert the stack of paper into the product and gently push the paper guides snugly against the paper. Make sure that the paper is completely inserted into the product and can be picked up by the paper rollers.
  6. Try printing again. If the issue is not resolved, try loading different brands of paper and different types of paper, one type at a time, into the product and then try printing again. If the issue persists, continue with the next step.
Step three: Adjust the paper settings in the print driver The paper settings in the print driver must match the paper settings for at least one of the installed paper trays.
  1. Open a document in the program being used to print.
  2. Click File , click Print , and then click Properties . The product Properties dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Paper/Quality tab.
  4. Choose the appropriate paper size from the Size is drop-down menu.
  5. Choose the appropriate paper type from the Type is drop-down menu.
  6. Click OK and then click OK again to print the document..
  7. If the issue is not resolved, continue with the next step.
Step four: Clean the rollers
  1. Turn off the product and unplug the power cord.
  2. Open the access door to gain access to the rollers. Depending on the model, this is usually the rear access door. See the product user guide for information about locating the rollers.
  3. Clean the rubber rollers with a lint-free cloth, lightly moistened with water.
  4. Make sure that any paper rollers that rest on the input tray, which are located behind the back rollers, are cleaned. A clean cotton swab, lightly moistened with water, might be necessary to reach these rollers.
  5. Close the access door and plug in the power cord.
  6. Try printing again. If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
Step five: Service the product If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product. CauseAny of the following issues can cause the error message to appear:
  • The paper trays are empty or overloaded.
  • The paper is curled.
  • The print side, or shiny side, of the paper is not loaded in the input tray face down.
  • The paper might not be engaged with the feed rollers.
  • The paper-width guide is pressed against the paper stack too tightly.
  • The paper tray is not completely inserted into the product.
  • The paper settings in the print driver do not match the paper loaded in the paper tray.
  • The rubber paper-feed rollers are coated with dust.

Make sure that you have tray 1 set for the correct paper type. Leaving the paper type as unknown will result in very slow printing as the printer will assume that it might be printing on heavy media, envelopes or the like.

HP 9050 MFP keeps asking for tray 1. Configuration is set to use tray 4 first, but everytime a print job is sent to the printer, it requests load paper in tray 1. How do I get this problem fixed?

You need to check the paper types you have assigned and the paper types that users are requesting. Print out a configuration page and make sure that Tray 4 shows as plain paper. If it does not then check all the stops. The 2000 sheet tray 4 units are noted for having the stops not engage and this causes the printer to think that tray 4 is custom media. You can also go into diagnostics and print a paper path test for each tray to ensure that all the trays are working.

HP Lazer 4300dtn keeps trying to print from tray 1. How can I set the default to tray 2?

Selecting which tray is used for printing

You can select how the printer pulls paper from the trays.

Understanding tray order

When the printer receives a print job, it selects the tray by trying to match the requested paper

type and size with what has been loaded in the trays. Using an "autoselect" process, it searches

all available trays for the paper that satisfies the request, starting with the bottom tray and ending

with the top tray (tray 1). The printer begins printing the job as soon as it finds the proper type/

size.

Note The "autoselect" process occurs only if no specific tray is requested for the job. If a specific tray

is requested, the job prints from the requested tray.

If paper is loaded in tray 1 and tray 1 is set TRAY 1 TYPE=ANY and TRAY 1 SIZE=ANY on the

Paper Handling menu, the printer will always pull paper from tray 1 first. See "Customizing

tray 1 operation" on page 47 for more information.

If the search fails, a message appears on the printer control panel display requesting that

you load the correct paper type/size. You can load that paper type/size, or you can override

the request by selecting a different type/size at the printer control panel.

If a tray runs out of paper during a print job, the printer automatically switches to any tray that

contains the same paper type/size.

The autoselect process changes somewhat if you customize tray 1 operation (as explained in

"Customizing tray 1 operation" on page 47) or set tray 1 for manual feed (as explained in
"Manually feeding paper from tray 1" on page 49). See if this works. Good luck !

If you using a mac: After choosing the Photosmart C7200 to print your file on the print preview, change PAPER SIZE to 4x6, then lower down, change from PREVIEW to PAPER TYPE/QUALITY, more options will open underneath, on SOURCE, change from MAIN TRAY to PHOTO TRAY. You should also change the PAPER TYPE to some kind of PHOTO PAPER (whichever one your using, but the standard seems to be HP ADVANCED PHOTO PAPER)

Re: HP 1320 won't take the tray designation for 2 and 3 Help

    Hello classygirl,

I had this exact same problem and resolved it by downloading the HP LaserJet 1160/LaserJet 1320 North American and Western European Full Printing Solution which can be downloaded from support.hp.com.

Because the 1320 does not have a built-in interface, installing the basic drivers will not work. You must download and install the full 400+mb package.

    Hope this helps!

    3055 sends to manual feed

    Hi there
I've had a similar problem in windows instead of the mac, but it sounds like it's a
similar problem where the computer's telling the printer to use a
different sized paper to what the printer's been told is in the trays. For example, if, say, your document is set up for A4 sized paper, but the printer is set up to think it has Letter sized paper in the trays, it'll ask to have A4 sized paper installed in the tray instead.

Go into the system setup on the printer and select the paper setup menu.

Select Tray 1 and choose the right paper type and size from the settings (After you choose the paper type you have to go all the way back through the menus on the printer and choose the paper size as well)

    Hope this helps!
