Electrolux EW28BS71IS4 french door. Refrigerator part no cooling. Freezer is fine.

  • yeliza Aug 24, 2011

Thank you. I will check all that. Just wanted to add that the fridge draw with separate temperature control works fine. For the last couple days we had tryed to adjust the temperature on eletronic display, but it had been going down a little and then back up to "high" again. Today it would not go down at all. Keeps displaying "60 F". We've also noticed that the fridge stoped making the rattling noise.

The answer to these questions lies in the way the freezer/fridge combo works. The freezer is where the cooling coils are located. Then air is moved over the coils and circulated through the fridge side by a small blower or fan. The problem arises when the air is not circulated for some reason. -------
The reasons the air is not moving is usually two reasons The fan or blower has failed. The coil is covered over with ice and blocks the air flow.
The first reason is pretty simple to fix, you simply replace the air circulator and things are good again. The second reason can be more difficult. 1. The timing device that runs the defrost cycle of the refrigerator is defective. 2. The heater coil that melts the water is shorted or not working
Usually the first thing to check is the heater coil. If there is resistance through the coil then most likely it is still good. The timing device can be an advanced defrost control board or a mechanical timing device. If the heater coil checks out to be good then the problem should be the timer.
For most situations, unplugging the refrigerator and allowing it to defrost on it's own helps. This procedure is called manual defrost reset procedure. You can try this procedure and see if this helps, before replacing any parts.--------

The manual defrost reset procedure is as follows : ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take approx 4 to 6 hours more after you reconnect to get proper cooling. Then check, after few hours, do you get cooling in both fridge and freezer section or only in freezer section.-------- if same problem noticed then defrost heater and defrost board parts needs to be tested.--------

You can get required parts from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site.

----------- This should help. Thanks.Helpmech.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it'll be the control.

Part 16 on this DIAGRAM is your damper control.

Electrolux diagnostics for refrigerator with freezer on bottom

Hey friend, thank you for your post!
Based off the information you have provided your Electrolux refrigerator is running but not cooling. It could be possible that your refrigerator is stuck in a defrost mode. I would suggest resetting your appliance which can be done by flipping the household circuit breaker for roughly ten minutes. If that does not correct the issue I would seek assistance from a professional to come repair your appliance. -Matt

Electrolux refrigerator not cooling

Is your freezer side working fine? If it is, and it is just the refrigerator portion of your appliance, then I would check the damper switch/door that is between the doors. The freezer actually sends its cool air into the refrigerator portion to help cool it.
