My family mechanic located the leak and said that I would need to have my timing cover replaced, but does he mean the cover along with the gasket? What does this entail? I bought the car about a year and a half ago and the timing belt itself had been recently replaced. Will I need a new timing belt as well?
You have more problems than the timing cover. It sounds like your crank seal is gone, or you engine oil pump leaking. Your timing cover doesn't have oil in it. . Tell your 'Mechanic '' to take the timing cover off and see where it's coming from. And while you are there you should also change your water pump. They usually have about the same life span as the timing chain. Make sure you use all new gaskets O ring and seals. Let me know what it looks like after the cover is removed. You have to remove the valve cover on some toyotas to get at the cover. Hope this info helps keep me informed Cheers from Nova Scotia

either the cam seals are leaking or the valve cover gasket is leaking into the timing cover. maybe even head gasket...
but in most of the cases like oil leaking from behind the timing cover the camshaft seal is the faulty .and replacing the camshaft solves the problem.

I have the same car and the same problem. I can see the oil shooting out at the (upside down) rear, right side of the oil pan. This side of the oil pan is covered by a piece of plastic foam. There are no bolts on this side of the pan. Toyota recommends grey Formagaskit to seal the pan. The natural flow for this leak is all over the bell housing. The piece of plastic foam is attached to bell housing inspection cover. Good Luck!!!
