hi there try to get a price on the speed sensor located on the transmission this sensor tells the computer how fast the van is going in turn the transmission shifts gears and there will be information sent to the speedometer . the reason the van only goes in low gear is to protect the system because the sensor is damaged so replace the speed sensor and try again , let me know how its running after relpaceing the sensor good luck

I had the same problem with my 90 daytona. The tach and the speedometer would work intermitantly. I took the whole gauge cluster out, and heated all the soldering with a solder gun to reflow the connections. It seems that this is a common problem with the connections cracking. You may not be able to see the cracks in the solder.

It should do unless the gauges or boken/loose wire was the original fault

It's your speed sensor at the transfercase on the drivers side i believe. Check the wire and clip to the sensor for any break or loose contacts.
Easy fix and is about a 30 min job to do with simple tools.
Un-clip the wire conntection, remove the retainer bolt and slide and sensor out. To install just do everything in reverse and add transmisson oil if needed.
Most of the time, it's going to be the sensor. Keep in mind that there are two sensor's so make sure it's the one on the output shaft at the transfercase. The other one is closer to the front of the transmission on the same side with is the input Volosity speed sensor.
If it was your ABS sensor, you ABS light would come on in your dash.
Good luck and hope this helps
