Speedometer/odometer/cruise control isn't working.

My 1998 Nissan Pathfinder (4x4 automatic) has a speedometer that isn't working, along with the trip and odometer, that and cruise control isn't working. The diagnostic tool says it's the speed sensor at fault. I'm wondering if it's just the speed sensor in the transfer case I can check/replace due to the speedometer/cruise being out and not mess with the abs wheel speed sensors. Can you give me advise?

I will give this a try and see if its a bad sensor or a poor connection. Thanks a bunch for the advise.

It's your speed sensor at the transfercase on the drivers side i believe. Check the wire and clip to the sensor for any break or loose contacts.
Easy fix and is about a 30 min job to do with simple tools. Un-clip the wire conntection, remove the retainer bolt and slide and sensor out. To install just do everything in reverse and add transmisson oil if needed.

Most of the time, it's going to be the sensor. Keep in mind that there are two sensor's so make sure it's the one on the output shaft at the transfercase. The other one is closer to the front of the transmission on the same side with is the input Volosity speed sensor.
If it was your ABS sensor, you ABS light would come on in your dash.
Good luck and hope this helps

Which wires go together to show mileage on a 1998 Nissan Frontier Manual Speedometer with tach?

Hi Wendy. My name is Tim Dorton, I was a Nissan Senior Tech. The Frontier manual and auto transmissions are the same as far as the odometer is concerned. The computer uses the signal from the speed sensor to control the cruise control, speedometer, and determine mileage. Does the speedometer and cruise control work? If so the the problem is most likely in the guage cluster. Here is the wiring from the speed sensor.z+elqmx9ihycqaaaabjru5erkjggg==

Odometer no work

The plastic gear in the back of the instrument panel is known to crack and break, this may have happened, A trip to the auto-recycler may net you a new-to-you speedo cable!

Transmission speed sensor

You could have a faulty speedometer/odometer combination meter causing a false Vehicle Speed Sensor error.
My 1998 Sienna had the following symptoms:
- Speedometer and odometer failed intermittently
- The check engine light would come on and I would get a p0500 code in the OBDII.
- The cruise control would stop working at the same time the speedometer failed.
There is a speed sensor in each one of the tires and they feed the speed information to the ABS ECU. From the ABS ECU the speed signal goes to the speedometer/odometer combination meter, and from there it goes to the Engine Control Module and to the Cruise Control ECU. I could see a signal coming into the speedometer/odometer, but no signal going out. Replacing the speedometer/odometer combination meter fixed the problem.

Your computer was not upgraded when the recall was done, take to dealer and tell them to upgrade your computer to reflect the changes made during the recall.

Odometer not working in 98 windstar

If the speedometer does work, but the odometer doesn't work, then you have a bad speedometer head assembly. The speedo head is a microprocessor that gathers the info coming from the vehicle speed sensor and translates it for you on the speedo and the odo. If one is working, but the other isn't, then it is getting the VSS signal, it just isn't processing it right. You could also be experiencing the below issue: The Brake Pressure Differential Deactivation Switch (SCDS) (2B264) located under the Master Cylinder (Behind the Air Filter) over time develops a leak. This causes a short and a fuse trip, fuse #10 if the engine is on. This leak also causes brake fluid to wick down two wires to the ABS brake module (2C219). The fluid accumulates on the (always on) power connectors for the ABS brake system which are powered by fuses 101 and 102 and are both 40 amp. The fluid attacts moisture, road salt and leads to a fire when the fluid and moisture act as conductor between the hot leads and ground. This switch has been the subject of other Ford Recalls, just not the Windstar van yet. Below is a picture of the switch in question. Notice the fluid that leaked on the part below it. This switch will cause cruise control problems, speedometer, odometer and ABS brake system problems.

Speedometer works intermittently

It is most likely the speed sensor in the transmission.
