I am getting both the P0171 and P1130 codes. Could this combination identify a more specific area to look at? I know what each code means.
Air/Fuel Mixture System Lean Bank 1
- Intake air leaks (vacuum leak somwhere)
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring - coil, igniton module, distributer malfunction
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure- fuel filter or weak pump
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection
or bad pcv valve.
******************* most likely vacuum leak

The meaning of:
P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold on Bank 1
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold on Bank 2
Basically the Oxygen sensors ( one before and one after the catalytic converter ) have abnormal readings from the exhaust. Further diagnosing will need to be done by a mechanic to find the source of the problem. The possibilities could be the O2 sensors themselves, a leak in the exhaust manifold, a bad catalytic converter, and etc.
SOURCE: I'm getting the check engine light code: P0171
Trouble Code: P0171
Fuel System Too Lean (Bank 1)
Possible Causes:
A/FS or HO2S is contaminated, deteriorated or it has failed
Air leaks after the MAF sensor, or in the EGR or PCV system
Base engine "mechanical" fault affecting one or more cylinders
Exhaust leaks located in front of the A/FS or HO2S location
Fuel system supplying too little fuel during cruise or idle (faulty fuel pump or fuel filter)
Fuel injector (one or more) dirty or pressure regulator has failed
Vehicle driven low on fuel or until it ran out of fuel

P0171 is a lean code. Open the hood, and locate the mass air flow sensor. Small black thingy in the intake tube between the air filter box and the engine, held in with 2 small screws. Remove the connector, remove the screws, and remove the sensor. Look into the sensor, you are going to see a couple of wires deep inside it. They will probabaly be "fuzzy" looking. Spray some brake cleaner on the wires until they are nice & clean. This will cure the P0171 code. Then check the air filter; replace it if it is dirty.
P1130 is an air-fuel sensor code, bank one, sensor one. More often than not, when we see this code, we replace the air-fuel sensor. Buy the replacement from you Toyota dealer, because the aftermarket sensors will not send the proper signal to the ECU, and you will be upset for having to buy a second sensor.
P0440 is a leak in the evaporative side of the fuel system; this looks after the fumes of the fuel in the tank. There are several reasons for seeing a P0440, like leaking vacuum lines, faulty fuel cap, rusty fuel filler tube at the cap, etc. This is kind of difficult to rectify without the proper equipment needed to diagnose what & where the actual leak is.
Hope this helps, please consider kind remarks regarding this solution. Thanks.

more than likely your mass air flow sensor is bad. it is located. on the air fliter box to the right of the box lid. cost about $200.00 at the dealership. go to autozone or advance and you can the same thing this one is a refurbished one for half to cost. un plug sensor. un screw two phillips screws, pull it out and put the new one in. thats it. good luck
SOURCE: i have a code P2238 toyota rav4 2004
Code # p2238 is for the air fuel sensor, you may have a bad sensor the one in the exhaust manifold.
