If you look at page 16 of the user manual it tells you how to assign the devices to the optical connections. Once this is done it should work. If you don't have the manual just type "denon avr 2802 manual" into Google and it will show a free PDF file of it. On my search it came up first!

I'm afraid that sounds like an issue with the power supply that feeds the main power amps. Especially on all channels. Could be the capacitors associated with the power supply. Sometimes you can see them bulging or even stuff coming out of them!

You should be able to feel if it is overheating. You can check the power output devices out to see if they are available and cheap to buy. Just look at the devices on the heatsink inside the unit and write down the numbers. Then look on Google for them. If they are hard to find or expensive you can expect a big repair bill. So that might steer you away from repair!

Because the sound is only faint says to me that the power amp that controls the left channel is faulty. You need to look at the device(s) on the heatsink and probably replace them.
