Make sure the discs you are using are compatible with your drive. Some drives will burn dvd - r discs but not dvd + r discs. Hope this helps.

1.Please cheack weather the DVD meadia is DVD R/W combo drive, 2.Then only the DVD media will be Burn or write tO the Blank dvd media & then check weather the blank cd is a dvd r/w cd.

I would suggest cleaning the drive with a cleaning dvd, $19.99 at most retailers. Or you can open up your computer and verify all connections to the drive are good, disconnect and re-connect to be sure. Hope this helps.

Usually this indicates the write heads are going out of alignment. There is no easy repair for this and a new drive is your best bang for your buck. When these drives were $300-$400 we could spend the time to align things, when you can buy them for $30 and a cheap shop rate is $50 an hour you just can't fix these.
What happens is the dvd requires a lot more accuracy but cd's do not. So the dvd stops working while the cd seems to work fine. You will notice next that cd's you make will stop working on other machines and the last will be not reading cd's. Be careful with what you store on cd with this drive as the cd's may not be able to be read on other drives or computers as the alignment is too far out for them.
