I have a 19.7 cu ft Hotpoint side by side Refridge/Freezer No Frost CSX20BA. It is 15 years old. The ice maker is not producing as much ice as in the past and the cubes are not completely solid.....more hollow when they are made. Any ideas? I cleaned under/behind the unit (major dustbunnies) w/ shop vac. I believe this ice cube maker was put in by my dad after we bought it....wasn't installed at the store. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!

SOURCE: Admiral Refrigerator makes hollow ice

Hollow ice cubes are due to low water pressure to the fridge. Water thru the door should have good pressure behind it. This is a good indicator of water pressure. Should be able to fill a glass quickly. Causes for low pressure are self-piercing saddle valves on the water line (switch to drill type (1/4") valve) or reverse osmosis system or filtering system on water line to the fridge. R.O. systems should not be used. Increase water pressure and that will fix the hollow cubes. The loud noise may be the sound of the water valve on the fridge when it is acivated. This sound is normal and some are louder than others.

SOURCE: Ice maker makes hollow ice! Why?

Not getting enough water into the ice maker. Could be a partially frozen supply line, restricting the total water input, or it could be that the timer needs to be adjust.

If the water supply tube to the icemaker is frozen. It will be a white rubber tube on the right side of the icemaker. Warm it with a hair dryer, remove it from its aluminum tubing, and make sure there is no ice all the way back to where the supply tube comes from the water valve. After thawing, your icemaker should start working again.

Now..... why did it freeze? Most likely, there is a restricted airflow to the back of the unit, which is need to keep that aluminum supply tube just warm enough to assure all the water flow OUT of it into the icemaker, and doesn't freeze up on contact. Make sure your coils and the airspace under the fridge are completely clean (vacuuum them well) and it should cure the problem.

To adjust the timer, follow the instructions here http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/icemaker/diagicemaker.php

SOURCE: Ice maker is making hollow ice cubes, some only half frozen

Most ice makers have an adjustment screw to control the cube size. Its usually hidden behind a plastic panel on the front of the ice maker. A quarter turn either way and some trial and error testing should get you pointed in the right direction to your ideal ice cube.

How is it best to defrost this as it is very clogged up with ice?

Hello Cathy,

the best way to defrost that little refrigerator is obviously turn off the unit and use a blow dryer and use it to melt the frost.

Frost in freezer, fan in freezer sometimes changes speeds, low pitch or humming noise, manualy defrosted it 1 month ago seemed to be fine for two weeks, vegies freeze in drawer. hotpoint hss25gfta 5 yrs old

If the defrost thermostat is bad it will need to be replaced, otherwise you will have to continuously manually defrost the unit. The noise you hear is probably the fan hitting the ice. The defrost thermostat assists in melting that ice about every eight hours.

Replace the icemaker. It sounds to me as though the harvesting thermostat has gone bad and it would cost more to have a serviceman fix it than to just buy a new icemaker. This is a common problem that I've seen so many times !

Frigidaire White 16.5 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator (FRT17HB3)- The freezer works, the refridge portion is warm, it started last week ans seemed intermitten, we turned the cooling higher and it was fine...

Hi,

All of your cooling coils on this model are located in the freezer. If you are cold enough in the freezer your problem is air flow to the fresh food section.

- There is fan behind the back wall of the freezer, be sure that is running.

- Look for frost build up on the back wall of the freezer, if present we have a defrost problem

- look for the duct or channels between the floor and freezer and top of the refrigerator they could be blocked with ice, if so we have a drain problem.

Let me know what you find and I will help you from there.
