Replacement LCD? My daughter threw the Wii remote at the TV and broke the 2 nd layer! [Baseball is no longer allowed to be played in our family!] That area shows a color kalaedescope and no picture can be displayed there. Is the TV a goner or can it cost effectively be fixed? thanks Pete

When the display is cracked Sony charges a dud fee in additional to the cost of the replacement panel that is about the same price or more than the replacement LCD panel. They can't refurbish a defective. Add to that about $400 for in-home labor, then taxes and the repair will cost the same or more than a new TV. Example, $1200 panel cost, $1500 non-return of rebuildable dud, $400 labor, Taxes = $3300+

If you could replace the panel yourself, all you would save is the labor cost and the tax on labor charges.

Basically if any flat panel screen (LCD or Plasma) is physically damaged, the TV set is junk. They do make pretty abstract art pieces though. You could sell the whole set for parts on Craigslist or eBay, but don't expect to get much.

Thanks devan - that is what I expected but feared.
Considering that a replacement is $1000+, how much is the repair?
Are the parts available to a consumer?
Can I fix it myself? [I am a computer hardware tech and replace laptop LCD's.]

The first layer of your TV is actually a screen guard and in most cases a anti-glare guard .Whats broken is your actually LCD Panel, which I hate to say is not cost effective to replace, and it will need to be replaced. I had another customer recently who had the same issue with Wii tennis. You should be able to press in on the panel where its broken and the picture will seem fine aside from the crack, but the TV will need to be replaced.
Message me back if you care for any suggestions on a new TV. Have a great day.

If this is a plasma set (I don't have a parts listing for a 42px5d), then the panel needs to be replaced. It can not be repaired. The panel will likely cost almost as much as a replacement set. Check with a local servicer for the parts cost BEFORE you request an estimate. They should be able to give you a parts cost without you incurring an estimate fee.

Based upon that info, determine whether or not to repair the set.

40" LCD tv pierced w pieces of glass!

Unfortunatly no.. you will need to either live with it or replace the entire LCD panel. You can have it repaired using a TV Repair guy but often it costs as much as a brand new LCD. My daughter broke my $1,600 LCD. It would have cost $1,200 to fix.. so I just bought a new one. After that I picked up a TV screen protector called TV Armor http://www.tv-armor.com Its designed to protect the TV from damage. Now I dont have to worry anymore when she is playing near it. It works really well.

Wiimote hit my 42" lcd can it be fixed?

The LCD panel which is responsible for the picture is toast. You will need to replace it. You can have it repaired using a TV Repair guy but often it costs as much as a brand new LCD.

I recommend just finding the best sale you can and buy a new one.

Samsung 40"

Without a model number I gather the TV she threw the remote at is a LCD tv? If so look at replacing the set as the LCD panel is now damaged and usually cost more that what a replacement set will. There is no fixing a damaged LCD panel.

I have 2 flat panel TV's that don't work, one plasma, one lcd

Michael, my suggestion is that both units be scrapped. The plasma panel is broken the Dell and not cost effective to repair. If the inverter bds are missing in the Sharp, they were most pulled because the Sharp has a bad LCD panel. Not cost effective to fix either unit.
