I have a Teac USB portable diskette drive, N533. Until recently, it has worked okay. However, it has started not opening any diskette I put in and instead a message appears that the disk needs to be formatted. Even when I try to format it, the message will then be that Windows cannot format this disk. I have tried various disks and all with the same problem. Disks will not open and even show me the files which I know are on there. The device worked until yesterday. I have tried switching USB ports, restarting computer, etc., but nothing seems to work.

First; try blowing into the DVD reader, sometimes it is just a hair. also try a DVD cleaner disc. Check if the drive spins up correctly, and "listen". If it's spnning but having trouble reading you will hear a whizzing sound as it tries different speeds.

Hi,

The below is on the basis that the drive is visible in "Computer"...

This can be tow thing, one the drive is not receiving enough power from your USB port, try unplugging any addtional USB devices connected to the PC, if this doesn't work try a powered USB hub. Second the floppy disk is faulty or the drive itself is faulty.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Teac external floppy disc drive will not format floppy disc

U need an interface, if u want to use the "34 pin out" from floppy disk unit, to the "24 pin in" connector jack, inside KN 1000 main board.
U can get this interface unit bboard from "the KN 1000 floppy disk drive unit".
Just open this unit SY-FD20, and pick out that interface board from this unit,
Then use it as interface to connect your new 34 pin out floppy disk drive to connecting to the 24 pin in connector jack inside the KN 1000 mainboard.

I have a USB portable diskette external floppy drive. It is new. It is supposed to work by simply plugging the in teh usb. When I try to use it, it always tells me to format the disk. i of course, do not...

Try different and empty disk, then format it, when you can open it after you format it, then your first disk is damaged.

If still persist, then clean the drive using floppy drive cleaner, it should work.

Have bought a second hand IBM USB Portable Diskette Drive. It worked just fine at the sellers place. Now that I try and use my own PC I load a 1.44 Mb diskette and it tells me to load disk ??? What to do...

Hi Graham,
Your Portable USB 3.5 diskette drive uses a pretty old technology that would come with software or drivers needed to run it. You would need to check on your device manager on control panel. But I would advise you upgrade yourself to better storage devices like the flash drive or the CD/DVD USB portable drives. They are a bit more expensive, but the technology is newer and have less issues. Let's face it, the 3.5 diskettes are getting pretty outdated. Don't you think so?

Cheers & Kind Regards
