Need to update bios toshiba satellite c660,using ubuntu live dvd, will not boot hard drive, all normal recovery options used up

Hi There,
There are currently no easy ways to update a bios through linux at all - including live cd's. Your best bet is to make a bios update USB stick (or floppy depending on the age of the computer)
Here's a link to those instructions:
http://www.biosflash.com/e/bios-boot-usb-stick.htm
Alternatively, speaking from my own experience with a similar situation, you can take the hard drive out, use it in place of the usb stick, boot from it, update your bios, and go from there.

I updated the bios for my packard bell easy note laptop, model L4014. The laptop now just boots and reboots. It seems to have lost my drives. How do I resolve this problem

go into your bios and have a look at your boot order, when you do a bios update, usually it sets bios to default setting, most of the time making dvd drive 1st boot rather then hdd.
might help.

Computer will not boot after bios update

you updated the bios?

Its possible that your bios update failed and the bios is now corrupt.

try to rest the bios by th bios jumper, consult your manual or just remove the power and the battery for a hour and try again.

If the bios is corrupt it would need to be removed from the motherboard and reprogrammed.
