This is the ASC indicator. It comes on when the system is turned off. To get the light out, turn the system back on by pushing the ASC(dsc) button on the console. It's located just ahead of the shift lever. ASC is the Automatic Stability Control system.
It's a traction control light. it warns whenever the system is turned on and the car senses a loss of traction. you can deactivate the system by pushing the ASD(dsc) button and holding. this light will illuminate to say: you may lose traction.
Can sometimes be activated by faulty brake(ABS) sensors,ABS pump,While checking ensure that your brake pads aren't worn right down.
If the light still stays up get your local service dealer to scan cars computer for fault code relating to which sensor is perhaps faulty.
I hope this helps you or get back with your findings

A circle with question mark symbol on the outside

Are you sure it's not a circle with an exclamation point? if so, it means there is an issue with your brakes, usually the pads are low. I've never seen one with a question mark and I've owned 5 Audis. If it is indeed a question mark post a picture of it and we will try to figure out what you've got there.

The light came up on instrument panel. its the one looks like an exclamation mark. is ther a problem with the hydraulic brake system?

There are two symbols with an exclamation mark. The first is a oblong circle with the exclamation mark inside with ( ) on each side of the oblong circle. That symbol is for brake system warning light. Check brake fluid level, check brake pads. The other symbol is (!) and is flat on the bottom its suppose to resemble a tire, it means there is a problem with the tire monitor system, check your tire pressure, if you have low tires you will have to drive car after servicing the tires then the light should go out. Tire pressure should be on a placard on the driver door or door frame.

I don't know what a particular warning light is. It came on today; it looks like a circle with little lines coming out of it. Sort of like a "light bulb" idea symbol.

a circle with an exclamation mark is usually the low tire indicator (that symbol is a tire and a tire gauge). sometimes when the temperature drops down, one of the tires will show up as low & later in the trip when the tire warms up, it will read correctly. Or, you can just have oone that is too low & need air. good luck

Alert symbol appears on dash board on ford focus estate 2001

Check your brake fluid level 1st. There are 3 different symbols, all related to brake system. A circle in brackets is brake fluid 'non petroleum based'. There is also an exclamation in brackets (brake system) , and abs in a circle. Do u have the owner's manual? It would have an explanation of the symbols. I'll send a site to get a free download of the manual for you, so if this doesn't answer your question, you can get it from the manual (and it's good to have the manual for future reference). Curt
