ABS light on, spedometer doesnt work (jumps around) until 40 km/h
I also noticed today for that under the speedometer two symbols were illuminstated in Red. One was a capital P with a circle around it, and beside it was an exclamation point, also with a circle around it. I've looked int he owners manual, and the description of warning lights for the dash doesn't even show those two symbols. Any ideas out there?

You changed the battery? Have the battery load tested with a carbon pile. The problem could be a bad cell in the battery IF that is not the case it could be an ECM issue. Alternators are internally regulated

My nephew has a 96 taurus also when his radio went out he noticed that his speedometer was not working as well so we check the fuses under the dashboard and found that a fuse from the radio memory was blown . We replaced it and the radio and speedometer and the odometer worked fine
Look on the wiring harness it plugs in on top of the transmission
make sure all the wires are together. If every thing is ok with the wiring, The sensor is the only thing it could be. A gook used spedometer sensor from the junk yard will work this sensor dosent take a lot of abuse so a good used one will be cheap and work just fine. This is a job you can do your self and save a lot of money. I had the same problem with my 95 civic
