My Sony KP53S35 rear projection TV has a very dim picture and I was told that I need to clean the mirrors. Can you tell me how to take apart the TV to get to the mirrors and how to clean them?

Chance are your problem is the projector lamp and not the mirrors. if the tv is 4 years old or more buy a new lamp, they are easy to change. as far as the mirrors go, you have take the back off to get at the mirror but its a lot of work try the lamp first.

Do I need to clean the screen on a DLP television? I have only changed the bulb. I feel like the picture is getting less sharp.

Not the screen so much as the projection mirror which is located on the rear wall of the Set. If the mirror gets dull it can make the picture dim and dull looking. Cleaning the mirror will help. Some models have a small mirror which projects the image back onto the rear mirror. Dont use windex, just a damp cloth then dry good.

The tv looks too dim. you have to stand right in front of it to see the picture but it still looks dim.

Other than a circuit problem it may be dirt or dust on the lens. The model indicated has 3 picture tubes.

If you unplug set and remove back cover you should be able to see and reach the large black lens dead center and above the circuit boards. If the lens are very dirty the picture will be dark and dull looking.

There is also at inside top back of set a mirror--if it is dusty or has grime on it, same thing--not as easy to get at but with back off you can use a small mirror to examine it.

Clean the lens with a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner sprayed on the towel.

With back off, 2 minute job and if picture now much brighter, you are in business. Lens, depending on how much dust etc in your area should be cleaned one time a year or more-----do it yourself job and easy.

If this told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

How can I clean the mirrors on this tv?

to clean the mirrors you must remove the screen first there are several screws in the back to remove the screen. then there is a mirror shaped like a polligon clean this with a dry cloth do not use a paper towel. soft colth must be used on any optical surface. then clean the optical engine lens in the same manner. them the large mirror in the back. remeber if you leave a defect on any of these surfaces it will be amplified by the screen. this system relies on a lamp to provide bright picture so replace that as well. this should be a part of your anual cleaning agreement of the after market warranty you purchased assuming you bought one. dim picture = lamp, fuzzy, dim, dull picture = dust

UNABLE TO BRIGHTEN PICTURE

Your CRT coolant needs to be changed. Thats whats giving you the dim picture. You can also clean the projection mirror on the inside this often helps. But the coolant will need to be changed to get back the bright crisp picture. Hope this helps.
