I have just got my Archos 605 WiFi, and I've connected it to my computer, and it doesn't come up. Windows beeps, letting me know Ive connected it, but it doesn't show up in Media Player 11 or in My Computer. I'm using XP Pro with SP2 and all recent updates.
Now, when I connected it to my Laptop, which has Vista and Media Player 11, it detected my Archos 605 without a problem.
I have no media or files on my laptop that I can sync, so it does me no good to connect it to my laptop, its all on my XP Desktop.
One other thing...When I go and try to open "Add New Hardware", Windows tells me its already installing a device. I'm wondering if that is the 605 or not. There is no icon in the tray saying its installing anything.
On your pc, go to Start\run, type diskmgmt.msc and click ok to take you into Disk Management.
In here, you can associate your drive with a drive letter.
Hope this helps......

then i upgraded to Archos 605 Wifi (20GB-160GB) OS v 2.1.04 heres the link for 2.0.10 http://update.archos.com/5/a605/a605_r2.0.10/firmware_a605.aos and heres the link for 2.1.04 http://update.archos.com/5/a605/a605_r2.1.04/firmware_a605.aos
This is generally due to failed firmware updates, etc....here is something to try that has worked for some others: 1. connect the archos to the PC 2. click on repair 3. click on
done and wait for a few seconds and you will see the archos as a drive
in your windows (be patiant it takes some time) 4. once you see the drive, open it and make sure the System folder is empty, if not delete the file that exists there. 5. download firmware from archos website and put the firmware update file directly on the root of the archos drive 6. click repair again on the archos and done. I've been told this does not always work on the first attempt, so give it a couple of tries if the first attempt fails.
1. Download the latest firmware from Archos 2. Format the drive on your player 3. Connect the A605 to your computer using the USB lead 4.
Copy the new firmware the A605's root folder (Drive X: on your PC or whatever letter was assigned to your Archos 5. Click ok and you are finished
I managed to overcome the problem by doing a factory reset. Unfortunately doing this initially created more problems in that on reboot the main screen appearance looked as it should but was almost inoperable. When the usb cable was connected to my pc the disc did appear on My Computer . The system folder was only 1MB. By good fortune I had copied and saved my Archos files before I carried out the factory reset. Copying the original system files ( about 20MB) back to my Archos returned normal behaviour. Further, two additional buttons appeared. One was a manual arclibrary update button and the other a USB setup button . I cannot get file transfer to operate under windows media player mode and Windows media player 11. No problem though. I use PC hard drive mode and carry out a manual arclibrary update. None of this was possible prior to the factory reset. I believe I would still be having serious problems had I not saved and restored my system files
