How do I replace the battery on the Archos 605?
I purchased the battery at the link listed here
http://www.newmp3technology.com/605-30-battery.htm
The replacement is not easy, but I was successful
tools reqd':
a very small phillips head screw driver (for cover)
a very small allen key (for hard drive removal)
side cutters
solder iron (very small tip)
small shrink tube (or black elec. tape)
remove the back cover (4 small screws top and bottom of the gray back and 4 small screws at the silver sides of the unit) also be careful here as the screen is now loose and can fall away if not supported
remove hard drive (4 small allen screws) make sure you GENTLY wiggle the hard drive out of plug
the battery is now exposed
this was the nasty part, the battery can be removed out the back but you have to pry it out, I ended up prying and bending the battery to remove it (it was do or die at this point). once you have it loose snip the black and red wires leaving about 3 inches.
the new battery dropped into place very easily.
Strip about 1/4 inch off the blacks twine them together and carefully solder (if you twine them end to end make sure you slip a 1" piece of shrink tube over one before you solder, I twined them side by side so I could slip on the tube after) if you use elec. tape instead of tubing MAKE SURE you leave no wire exposed or you unit will likely be forfeight. Repeat process for the red wire making sure the battery lead does not contact anything but the other red lead.
I laid the 2 solder connections along the top edge of the unit so as not to interfere with the hard drive laying flat
reverse the order to reassemble and that should be that!
My new battery was flat on delivery but has now charged up fully and seems to hold a good charge.
Hi :
There is a video on youtube about this issue. Required is a smal screwdriver, cutting two wires (one at the time !!), inserting yr new battery, and reconnecting the new wires to the cut-off ones from the unit. You can solder these two wires, but in that case make sure you use thin shrink tubing, so the blank parts from the splice can not touch each other, and certainly not the casing from your archos unit.

I just found a place to buy a replacement battery (http://www.newmp3technology.com/605-30-battery.htm) and I was wondering if I can change it myself?
I bought a replacement battery for my Archos 605 WiFi 80GB from MegaCapacity.com (the one marked as 2600Mah), and it turned out to be about 1/2 in too long to fit. I only realized this after the whole unit was disassembled and the new battery soldered and ready to be reassembled. Beware!! I fear that this whole effort was a waste of time and money.
Hi,
Basically you don't for anything other than the 30gb !! I only found one link anywhere on the net to change the battery on the 160gb (which is what I have), and you have to completely take the unit apart (including the touch screen and the circuit board.
There is a video on youtube on how to change the battery on the 30gb (this might also be valid for the 80gb).
But if you have the 160gb, then you are stuffed !!! or you pay roughly £80-90 to send the unit back to archos to fix, but their customer service is virtually non existent. I wrote to them and was told that as my unit was no longer sold by them and out of warranty I should just look on archosfans.com !!!!
This type of customer focus is obviously aimed at the consumer buying a new unit rather than fixing the one they have....... All I am going to do is go back to using a PSP again and convert the files to mp4, the batteries are replaceable and the memory expandable.

Hi,
I had the same experience. I did find detailed instructions but unless you are a complete gadget freak, AND really good with little screws and soldering.....then I wouldn't bother........ I'm only 1 of those..... I can't solder !
I eventually send my unit back to Archos, apart from the customer service being the worst I've ever come accross... They said my PCB (printed circuit board) needed replacing.... and it would cost £102.
When I got it back, they service docket said they had replaced the PCB & battery (& frame.... wtf !!!!)
Anyway, long story short, unless you are very capable, I would just bite the bullet and pay your money !!! As I now have a battery that I paid £35 for and can't use it for anything other than a paper weight !!!
I've just removed the battery pack from the 160Gb unit mostly as per slartybfast's advice but ALSO removed the 2 side bars. The screen didn't fall out, I just had to use a bit of GENTLE persuasion. £12.99 replacement off e bay with free postage. Anybody who wants to give me a broken archos is welcome, much too good to throw away just because some tech support hike up the repair price.

Hi there,
You can get a replacement battery for the 160gb model from here:
http://www.mp3extras.co.uk/archos-battery-20gb-40gb-80gb-160gb-models-p-94.html
Although im not sure how easy it is to install ?
Excellent advice StartBfast! thanks
I found it very easy as I do a little electronics myself.
If anyone wants me to fix theirs just supply the battery (or I could) and ill do the replace job for £20.
I have an eBay shop - kas123456 so you can contact me there.
thanks
Karl
It would have to do by a technician proffesional beacuse it is not easy to do it by yourself.
