I had the same problem about a year ago, I replaced the door switch but didn't fix it, I found the brushes in the motor has worn out - Replaced the brushes and fixed the problem.
I had the same problem with the 'door open' light flashing and machine won't start. My electrician found a broken wire (door lock) in the wiring loom fastened to the underside of the washer bowl. The wire tie was fastened too tight from manufacture and wore through from the movement of the washer bowl. Soldered the wire and problem fixed.
Thanks Glenn, same problem checked for info and saw your post. Checked the brushes, sure enough worn out. Replaced them and its now running fine. Don't know how the "door open" light ties into it!
I had the same problem with AWM 8121, replaced the door interlock (AU$32) and it made no difference.
Got a tip that it could be the motor brushes worn out, .... and they were.
Replaced the main motor brushes (AU$50) and the machine came back to life, good as new.
Conclusion: When motor brushes wear out, machine stops with Door Open LED blinking (even when the door is locked). Real clever (not) design by Mr Whirlpool !! .... so they can sell door interlock switches?
P.S.: To replace the brushes, remove the rear cover and you'll find the motor near bottom LHS. It is secured by 1 bolt and is easy to remove after removing the belt (a bit tricky to put the belt back on). The brushes are visible and easy to replace (just remove 2 screws for each brush, no need to dismantle the motor)
Hi there,
just wondered if you fixed your problem.
thanks.
Apparently.. according to my morning of googling, the door locked light also flashes when the brushes need a clean.. or replacing?? Can anyone confirm this?? If so, how do I get to them please??

Yes Susan . The light flashing also means the brushes on the motor are worn out. They need to be replaced. Fairly easy job if you have some mechanical skill. There are two they are held into the motor by screws. You can access them by taking the back off the machine.
I have a whirlpool awo/d5446 changed pump as that was full of water!! Changed brushes on the motor as they were used up, now when it tries to spin up to speed it gets so far into the highest spin and the lights flash like there's a short circuit and appears to start the cycle all over again

My whirlpool model number awm8123 has the same problem. How do I get to the door switch? Can anyone give me advice please
hi there,
sounds like you have a door latch problem. the door latch contains a mechanical door switch, which can fail from time to time.
can you provide me with complete model # please?
8121 door light problem. Checked brushes-worn but OK.Removed door lock mechanism, jiggled contacts and re-assembled. Problem solved.
