The maytag has a bearing made if a cloth material that is at the front of the drum. when this wears down drum is grating off the metal drum support, hence the grinding sound. the bearing is fairly straight forward to replace.

My dryer (maytag atlantis) has started making a loud clunking noise with each revolution. its still drying fine but sounds terrible. any thoughts?

A loose belt will allow the drum to slip when clothes hit the paddles in the drum. It sometimes sounds like a pair of tennis shoes are in the dryer when it slips and is usually rythymic.

These machines also use drum rollers that can make a racket when they go bad.

Maytag gas dryer squealing

Hi, this is a belt issue. make sure the tension on the belt/motor is sufficient. adjust to specs. if the belt is fine, this will be bad bearings in the roller assembly.

Replace the rollers in this case.
