Rival 8420 : Electric Ice Cream Maker. The motor only hums.

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved from Cars and Trucks category.

Humming normally means the start / run capacitor on the motor has failed and needs replacing.

Or something is jammed, but unlikely.

Will not turn at all just makes humming noise

I had one do that and I opened the gear box and found that the last time we made ice cream & it started getting hard the motor caused the gear to pop a tooth off (plastic). so now you hear the motor running but no transmission. Take it apart and check or turn the ice cream tub connection socket 1/4 turn and see if that makes a difference.

How do you oil/grease the motor?

You don't, this is an electric motor. Oil and lubricants can cause damage to the motor or even cause a fire. If you feel that you need to have the motor serviced take it to a professional electrician who has experience in servicing such motors.

What kind of ice cream maker is it? I just bought a Nostalgia Electric Double Flavor Ice Cream Maker and it did the same exact thing. I poured the salty ice water out in some containers, set it aside to use it again, took everything apart, and started over from the begining. I put it all back together properly again, added the salty ice water once more, and turned it on. It worked! I hope it does the same for you. If not, I would see about getting it looked at somehow.

Good luck! :)

After plugging in the Maverick Ice Cream Shoppe shouldn't the paddle start turning? It is just humming.

Hi,
Err - yes it should.

If it is just buzzing, it sounds like a motor fault, or in particular the capacitor that provides the phase-shift for the motor to work.

If you feel competent, unplug and take a look and see if things are still connected in there - particularly the large capacitor. If there appears no obvious problems - replace the Capacitor with an identical size. Get it the right way round though !

Paddle does not move. Machine is about two years old.

sometimes the brushes take a set when unused.. Unplug the motor. Without using rnough pressure yo break anything, try turning the motor by hand using the paddle. You will be trying to turn the motor through ithe gesrs so use slow steady moderate pressure. This does work. as long as you watch what you are doing wiyh yhe force you apply. Good Luck. and enjoy the ice cream

Suspected motor burnout

Yes I too would guess motor burnout ( Motor is very overworked as ice cream hardens) You could replace the motor but I would suggest buying a new one because the cost of a major repair like that may very well cost more then a new unit!
I hope I answered the question to your satisfaction!

MOTOR DRIVE DOES NOT TURN

Dear Dannyvk,

I am having exactly the same problem with my rival 8200 ice cream maker. It worked once and stopped usual, when I first used it. The ice cream was wonderful.

However, when I started to make a second batch, the ice cream maker just hummed after I plugged it in. No movement of the pin/hub whatsoever. I tried to move it, by placing the steel can on top and moving it side by side. I plugged it in again, and experienced the same old humming sound.

Is it a fuse? Is the motor blown? Is this something that a small appliance dealer can repair at a reasonable cost? Can anyone help? I am so disappointed!

Faithful in Christ,
D.
