All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picturi have a large sony hd read projection / a few - 578ba6c.jpgset that needs the fluid changed.

hi, you`ve lost your convergence ic`s, unless your very proficient at solder work I`d advise you call a tech, will require removing 2 large IC`s and possibly a few small support parts, resistors, chemical fuses etc. Every place is a little different but runs approx. 300.00 at my shop, gl, video-tek

I got this TV for FREE from a guy posting it on craigslist because he saw "BLUE SWIRL LINES" also knows as "Retrace Line" on the screen and he went to several repair people and got high repair costs so he was giving it away for free, but i found a guide that tells you how to adjust the tv to make the blue or green or red lines go away, aparantly the line show up because the voltage on the color ray gun tubes that get out of adjustment. Here is the Link to the REPAIR GUIDE. http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html

Sony KP-57WV600 rear projection

sounds like bad CRT, some of these sonys have had defective CRT issues, usually all will come and go sooner or later (all 3 bad), you can pull the speaker grill off(either 2 1/4" screws on bottom or 6 1/4" on back sides) and pull off the Crt box cover (2'X3' piece) and lightly tap the CRT's with tv on, if they flare or get colored streaks in pix they are bad, CALL SONY 800 # and complain, also could adjust G2 (Screen control for color) for short patch. Will need new crts.

Faint red lines in a curved arch like pattern

Guys I did this myself real easy. Just don't turn the corresponding screw too far. Only need to adjust it until the lines go away. Do it on a darker screen so the lines are more visible. I did the red 2 years ago and the green 6months before that. The blue lines are coming on my screen now and I've fixed it in 10 minutes. The TV is amazing.

Problems with green arching lines

yes there is a small black box with 6 controls on it, take off the bottom front of the tv, behind that you should find a black piece of plastic you can remove by taking out 2 more screws. the black box should be in the upper rhs.now i don't remember if the top 3 are the screen controls or the focus controls. the rows should be labled, you are looking for the screen control row. the green control is the middle one. you can try turning down the control till you no longer see the green lines. try adjusting in a dark room, it will be easier to see the lines & when they are gone. if you problem is not solved by trying this, then i agree with your tech & the green tube is bad. good luck.
