My modem keeps going to standby mode

That is usually a problem with signal levels or the modem isn't set properlly. I don't know who your provider is but you should get hold of them and get them to fix it. They should send a tech out to check your signal. While they can check the modem remotely it does not provide them with the same information that a onsite check does. There is nothing you can check or change as a end user.

This can be signal levels, or signal quality (noise), or bad cableing and so on.

Problems with Motorola Surf SB5100

Have you tried unplugging the modem's power cord for at least a couple of minutes? If that doesn't work, have you called your ISP? The problem could be anything from a billing issue to an outage in your area, to a modem that needs to be replaced. Your internet service provider would be the best place to (try to) find help.

Need to get wireless on my laptop,

No, the SB5100 is just a cable modem, not a wireless router. You will need to keep your sb5100 but you will need to purchase a wireless router if you want wireless on your laptop. If you can also plug your laptop into the sb5100 via an ethernet cable for your internet connection. Linksys and Belkin and others make wireless routers that you can use for your wireless connections.

Motorola SB5100 and linksys router connection

The only thing that you need to setup on your Linksys for it to work with cable is to make sure that DHCP is enabled on the router.  You will need to plug your router into the modem via the ethernet cable and then plug your neighbors pc into a link port on the router (the cable modem plugs into the internet port)  You will also need to follow the reboot procedure.  Power everything off.
1: Turn on the surfboard and wait about 1 minute for the surfboard to make a connection with your ISP (the link light should come on).
2:Turn on your router and wait for your router to sync up with the surfboard . 3: Turn on your computer. Whenever you plug anything into a cable modem, you must recycle power to the modem.  It "remembers" the last device that was plugged into it, so it's memory needs to be cleared.

Can't connect Motorola sb5100 to a Linksys wrt54g

Make sure that you have the ethernet cord from your modem plugged into the WAN/Internet port on your router. Then unplug the power cord from your cable modem and plug it right back in. After the modem fully comes back online, unplug the power cord on the wireless router and plug it back in. wait 30 - 60 sec and then try and connect.

Most cable companies only allow one active"CPE" at a time for internet access. All this means is when you change what is connected to the cable modem you must always reboot the cable modem to allow access.

Hope this helps. Let me know if it does not work.

Inability to connect to Internet

The easiest solution would be to use an ethernet connection. A second problem is probably on most cable modems you can either use a USB connection OR an ethernet connection you cannoot use both at the same time.

Have you rebooted your modem after hooking it up? Each time you move your connection from your modem, it must be rebooted to issue new information specific to your equipment. Also, make sure you haven't pushed the "Standby" button on the top.
