You need to format the card in-camera. This is done via the camera menu.
The camera needs to format it to it's own file system, you shouldn't format the card in a computer.

Trying taking the memory card to a computer and looking through it for the photos. Take them off and put on pc. Then format memory card. Place memory card back in camera and take a picture. Then put memory card back in pc and take original photos and drop into folder that has new picture you took. It should work by noe if not then get a new memory card. Then try again.
This will take longer to write then to do it. Error 5 in my experience can be memory card, internal flash or actually an unlocked lens. The lens unlock button is pretty big and sometimes gets pushed in as my clients are zooming or twisting the barrel somehow. What I've had to do is shut the camera off, remove the battery. Unlock the lens ( I wait a second or two) then lock it back in place. Another problem was having an external flash installed and hit the internal flash button. The number 1 problem I've found was the Memory card, either it was (is) a new card that hasn't been formatted to the camera, a memory card that was formatted in the computer (that really messes with their brain) and another thing was continually using the delete button on the camera, or if it's a new card and you have formatted it and formatted it again and it still doesn't work try another card. Okay the last suggestion and what actually happened to me on my Canon EOS 1D Mark II and III I was using 4gig cards bought 8 gig cards and went nuts cause they wouldn't work. Went on Canon's site and downloaded the updates which ended the problem.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.
First of all, do not save any new file to camera's memory card.

If the card was blank when put back, then they are lost.
You should always format the card on the camera once you have downloaded the pictures to the PC. This ensures the camera can read it and it is happy the card is OK. Don't rely on any cards formatted by a PC.
