If this is happening with different remotes, then the first thing I would verify is whether its an IR sensor issue. Does the same thing happen when you are using the front panel controls on the tv?
Confirmed case of faulty IR sensor then. The input board at the front holds the sensor and it has to be replaced to resolve the problem.
Given the fact that this set is rather old, it is very difficult to find a replacement board from a third-party source. You will have to contact sony for that. The input board is the one that all the buttons on the front panel are connected to. It also has the IR sensor that is the source of the problem.
These are embedded circuits. See this image

The board costs about 15$. So even if it was possible, the cost of the sensor would be more than the cost of the board itself. So your best bet would be to contact sony for a replacement part. Call them at

No the on-set controls work fine
Is this at the top right corner of the set, do you have any info. on name and/or Sony part number for the replacement part please?
Is the sensor possible to replace, I have desoldering equipment and skills do you know if it's a part that Maplins or RS Compunents may stock? Is there a circuit diagram available of this circuitry?
Ok great thanks for the good response, I will give them a call tomorrow, what time zone are they in as I am in France
