GE GDS18LBR Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Logo
Posted on Dec 07, 2010

Hello I have a GE Profile with Brita refrigerator bottom freezer and it suddenly stopped cooling in the refrigerator portion. The freezer works but very weakly. Ive unplugged it, let it go for one hour, also cleaned all the huge amount of dust that was in the back bottom of the fridge and nothing seems to change. What to do?/

Absolutely right! I have been melting the ice every 2 months on my fridge, I even opened up the U shaped drain most distally as I thought the water was stagnating and backing up and therefore freezing. It doesn't seem to work. You recommend removing a metal cover. I am not sure where this cover is located? and how to remove it. I am able to put my finger into that hole but I am not sure where to locate that cover. Thank you very much!!

The drain is frozen up. The fan what provides the cooling air for the fridge is stuck in the ice. Remove the vegie crisper and pop the bottom under the crisper s out. Also remove the Styrofoam plate. You will see the problem right in front of you. Use a hairdryer to get rid of the ice build up. Good luck

Hockleyex's solution is only a temporary fix, the ice build up will occur again and again unless you solve the underlying problem. The drain has frozen over most-likely due to a design flaw in the GE fridges. The drain that you have de-iced drains into a snake-like line in the back of the fridge where it then drains into the evaporation tray in the bottom of the fridge. This snake-like drain line section is where the problem is, water builds up in here and freezes backing up your drainage system. This section in covered with a isolation-lined metal cover, by removing this cover this will prevent the line from freezing up and therefore eliminate the source of the problem. This does make the fridge slightly less energy efficient however the effects are not materialistic. I hope this helps, as my fridge is a slightly different model.

Thank you so much you are right olds I have been melting the ice down there month after month. I even opened up the U shaped drain thinking the water stagnates distally, which helped a bit but not enough. You speak about a metal cover. Where is it? I tried putting my finger in that small orifice where the drain starts at the back of the fridge but am not sure what I am looking for. Thank you!!

    Dkurze,

My fridge is not the same model and so my solution may not work if the structure is different. However, on my fridge on the back (outside) of the fridge there is a silver metal insulated cover that covers an S-shaped drain line, that is where my issue was.

If your model does not have this structure, you can still clean out your U-shaped drain by using a turkey baster or something like that. I hope this helps.

Check for failed evaporator (cooling coil) fan motor, located in the freezer or a failed component in the automatic defrost system.

GE Profile - fridge not cooling

If freezer is icing up, you might have a defrost problem. Frost free models have a heating element that is controlled by a timer to automatically defrost ice, defrost timer turns on defrost heating element every 12 hours to melt ice in freezer and allow good air flow.
You can test defrost element with an ohm meter(located inside freezer coils-will have two wires going to a plug connection), if OK replace defrost timer (located in various places depending on make and model
