I assume you want an external enclosure for this drive. Hard drives are built to standard dimensions and have the same power and data connectors, so any enclosure designed for a 3.5-inch IDE drive would work. Here's one I've bought several of for myself and others, and it's been reliable. There are many more available from many vendors. Just be sure you get one designed for IDE drives or that will take both IDE and SATA. If you get one meant for SATA only, the connectors inside won't fit your drive. Which enclosure you finally choose will depend on which you think is best (based on price, appearance, reviews, or whatever you look for), but any one will work.

Seagate Barracuda ATA IV 80 GB won't work in my Dell GX270. Any suggestions.

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty ?

even something as small as an electrical extension or a faulty fan lead can cause this problem

a computer needs all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly

motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail check all electrical extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working

make sure your computer ram modules are securely seated with no dust in sockets also Cmos battery has charge with no dust in the socket

I have a Seagate Barracuda ATAIV model ST340016A 40 Gig HDD. I want to put it in an external enclosed drive so that I can format and wipe the drive. I suspect it has some viruses on it that are bogging it...

You do not need a driver, I suspect the Seagate hard drive may be faulty.
Try conncting your hard drive as a Slave drive in your computer, if the BIOS does not detect the hard drive then the hard drive is faulty.

I have a Seagate 800GB extenal USB hard drive. The port on this hard drive, to which the USB data cable connects, is damaged. Are there any vendors who can repair this port? If not, are there any other...

You can purchase an "empty" disk-drive enclosure, and then "transplant" your current disk-drive into the new case. That should recover 100% of your data.

Take the old enclosure to the computer-store, so that they can sell you a "compatible" new enclosure.

Probably $20 to $40.

My Seagate Barracuda ATA IV model ST340016A runs for about 15 minutes and shut the computer completely down. I was told my drive is crashing and I should get a new one. can I just pick up any seagate or...

If I were you I would make sure your computer has no size barriers.. Some computer bios have
a maximum drive size that it will accept. Be sure to check this before purchasing. Of course you can always go with the same size 40GB, but your best move is to upgrade to a higher size.

Everyone has their opinion about vendors. If you ask me Drives fail just like any other device, so
get one with a good included warranty and back up your stuff. Look for speed and size and
make sure its the same I/O as your original.

MOST IMPORTANT : Verify your system can handle the size you wish to purchase
