Safe mode turns some feature off when activated so whatever program is forcing the shutdown might have be paused when connecting to the external hard drive. Also, try connecting the hard drive to a non-laptop intermediary device and then connecting that device to your computer and attempting to access the hard drive folder within the intermediary drive. so long as the file has not been overwritten there are many utilties available free that will accomplish this. I have not made this mistake in awhile so i cannot tell you the best current program, but I have used this one before
