Camera turns on normally. But when I push to take a picture, the screen goes black and it turns itself off. Tried recharging batteries and it helped a bit. But the battery charge only lasted a very short time. This doesn't seem like the typical low-battery that I've always seen with this camera.

That sounds like your batteries are worn out because they are rechargeable. The trickle charger doesn't have enough milli-amps to run the camera only to charge the battery.
first off, never use rechargable batteries in this camera or most digital cameras for that matter.2 use only lithium batteries, enegizer preffered.,also yes you can view all your pictures when connecting the usb, meke sure you turn the power on,and highlight the word computer, push ok.you should be fine.good luck .i hope i helped
You need to power it with rechargable batteries. with the MAH being no less than 2000. I bought a charger which came with 2batteries for less than a tenner
