GE side by side fridge not cooling, can't adjust temp control

My fridge is currently almost in a state of defrost for more than 24 hrs. Water is now leaking from the bottom of the freezer. I can't seem to adjust the temperature to get out of that mode. In the custom cool display all it shows is "hrs". Any assistance is apreaciated.

thanks,

Fridge does not cool down. set to 9 but still not cooling. is it in defrost mode?

  • Anonymous Jun 30, 2008

My refrigerator started to defrost a week ago and I had someone tilt it so I could clean the coils at the bottom. Although I vaccuum regurarly, I removed a lot of dust from the coils (I was never able to get anything under the frig to clean them properly).

The frig seemed to get up to temperature afterward, but again, it has started to defrost and will not get up to an acceptable temperature.

In addition, frost has formed in the freezer, on the back wall.

Refrigerator not cold enough for milk

Back of frig (outside) seems cool

        Runs continuously (not noisy)

Most likely it's not defrosting, many GE fridges need new defrost heaters every couple of years.

Try unplugging it for a minute and then plug it back in.

The refrigerator is not cooling properly. Two small vents on the inside wall. one is producing cool air the other is not. The freezer works fine.

Your defroster timer switch may be at faught. The defrost timer turns on a heating coil to defrost your frige. This is only a guess since I don't have the year. Do this: feel the walls if they are hard and they have no give to them, then your fridge is frozen up solid and no air can circulate. Unplug you fridge for 24 to 36 hours. Put towels on the floor to catch the water. If the defrost timer is bad it will defrost naturally with room temp. Plug back in after 24 to 36 hrs and see if bottom is now getting cold. If it is the defrost timer, the solution is not cheap. It's up to you to repair or invest in new. Good luck Google burdfrenzy

Why is our fridge frozen all the time?

Hi!!

The evaporator fan (little fan in freezer), is the one that blows cool air to the fridge. If your evaporator is freezing up, it could be due to the thermostat set too high, and the fridge control set too low. Set freezer temp. one number lower, wait 24 hrs and check, if evaporator still freezes, lower it one more setting. If temp in fridge is OK. leave it alone, or adjust accordingly.

Let me know how it worked out.

Good Luck!!

My GE profile side by side refrigerator's temperature is not staying where I put it. It keeps popping to 31 degrees when I set it for 37 degrees. My food is freezing !!

It may need to defrost. Shut it off for 4-5 hours to let any accumulated ice to defrost and see what happens.

There also is a control that directs more cooling to the refridgerator or the freezer compartment. It may need to be readjusted. It will take 24 hours to stabilize.

GE REFRIG. MODEL#TFX30PRYAA. side by side both

It sounds like your defrost control timer is working, but your defrost heater is most likely burnt out. It is a part number WR51X443
and is located behind the back wall inside the freezer. Turning the refrig off for 24 hours helped melt some of the accumulated frost, but not all. You will have to take that back cover off inside the freezer and melt all the frost with a hair blower, replace the defrost heater and reassemble.

Frig side is not cooling.

Check if there is frost on the back wall of the freezer, if so it is not defrosting. Many GE fridges need a new defrost heater every couple of years. If it's not defrosting, you can get by for a while by unplugging the fridge and leaving the freezer door open for 24 hrs, then plugging back in.

Freezer not cool enough and the Icemaker not working

Defrost the fridge freezer for 24 hrs and before turning on check for any water leaks. Turn back on if the cabinet pulls down to temp in 12hrs you probably have a defrost heater problem if it doesnt pull down at all it could be the fan or sensor fault. Either way you would be best to contact a suitable refrig engineer. Hope this helps. fishersofcambridge
