The answer to your question is no,your refridgerator will not over heat. If you don't want to replace door switch you should be able to remove bulbs to shut off lights. I would try working door switch several times to see if it's just not closing all the way. Hope this helps. Thanks

Ge refridge light heats up

When the door is opened for any long length of time, the light will get hot, remember it should switch off when you close the door, just peek through the seal without opening the door & see if you can see any light if so you will have to adjust the activating switch.

Whirlpool side by side (106.56692501). Refrig was not cooling but freezer is. Freezer is slowly heating up though. Unit is still running. It just isn't blowing air into the refrigerator.

You have ice in freezer fins. You need to remove back panel inside of freezer, melt all the ice replace panel, plug refridge back in. The ice causes bad airflow to the refridge side, causing to heat up.

Refrigerator light stays on even when door is closed.

Turn off the Low Ambient Switch on the upper panel of the Refrigerator door. That will turn it off.

Smell coming from the refrigerator

I would assume you have a bad self defrosting motor. This motor generally is used to cycle heat at certain points to keep the unit from allowing the condansation from freezing inside the refridg. I am assuning the smell is this motor heating up. Should the motor quit, it is normally not a fire hazard but should be taken care of. You'll need to remove the back panel of the refridg and you'll see the minuture motor and probably hear is making noise. Always be sure to unplug the refridg before opening the back panel or any service to prevent shock. Good luck
