Kenmore washer just stopped

I started a load of laundry and my kenmore 24642 top load washer just stopped after it was filled. It won't do anything and I have confirmed that the electrical outlet is working and tried putting it on another cycle. I have had it for about 3 1/2 years and never been serviced.

The lid switch is out, yes. Shortly after posting I figured this out by pushing a screwdriver way into the opening above the lid switch. I got it to come on for just a few seconds then lost it again. Wouldn't by any chance be able to talk me through replacing the lid switch would you?

  • cheshercatmm Jun 15, 2008

I will start with this and let you know if I need anymore information. Thank you so much! I searched and searched and could not find anything online to tell me how to get the cover off.

I was able to get the cover off and get to the lid switch assembly with no problems thanks to the above information you gave me. Again, thank you so very very much. You just saved me a $60 service charge from Sears.

Open and close lid, listen for 'clicking' sound. If no 'clicking' sound, check/replace lid switch. Also try tightening the lid hinge screws on the left side. if these screws come loose, the machine will not operate

To access the switch, REMOVE POWER, lift the console by one of three ways.
    1. Look in the back of the console, in each corner there will be a screw, unscrew until the console can be pushed forward.
    2. The trim on either side can be pried off from the top. Grasp the top of the trim and pull forward to expose a screw or insert a small screw driver through the top of the trim and pull toward you.
    3. insert a putty knife under each corner, push to release a latch.

    With console lifted:
    1. You will find a lid switch connector (white in color). Unplug the switch from the connector.

    2. There will be two brass colored clips. Place a flat blade screwdriver straight down into the opening on top of the washer and into the groove of the clip. Push the screwdriver down and away from you and the clip will release.

    3. Open the lid of the washer and place your hand under the front rim of the opening (DO NOT grab the wash tub). Tilt and slide cabinet forward to remove.

If more assistance is required, let me know.

My Kenmore 700 series top load washer doesn't fill enough water to agitate and wash the clothes on top

The machine is designed with an automatic water level sensor that even in a deep setting allows at the most 5 inches of water. The reason for this has to do with government regulations regarding energy efficiency.

While you could check intake hoses, this does not change the facts.

This would seem to possibly limiit the wash load. I would refer to the manual for any insight about that. My suggestion is to place the laundry evenly distributed just below the top holes of the basket.. For me to say it had 3.5 cubic feet capacity is of little value because who measures laundry by cubic feet. I hope the suggestion is of some help.

Kenmore washing machine will not stop filling

There is a water level sensor in the tube and it might be plugged. IT could also be the load selector or the control module.

Kenmore washer just stopped

This is a typical symptom of a defective or loose lid switch. If you open and close the washer lid, you should hear a clicking noise as the lid switch activates. The lid switch is usually located on the right-hand side under the washer casing rim. It is activated through a small slot, by a plastic piece on the lid called a lid strike. There are two mounting screws adjacent to the slot that hold the lid switch in place. Sometimes the screws come loose, or the lid strike breaks off, causing the switch not to activate. Or..the switch simply fails over periodic use. This results in the symptoms you describe. The washer fills, but fails to spin or drain. This is a simple repair that you can accomplish yourself. For step-by-step instructions, please refer to the following link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If you require assistance in locating replacment parts and/or have further questions, please post back with your complete model number (located aorund the tub rim), along with your comments. That way I can assure the accuracy of any part numbers.

NOTE: Use care not to slam the washer lid. This can also cause premature failure of the lid switch components.
