Did you tried reset procedure. There are two resets.
1) Soft reset.
2) hard reset.
The hard reset will delete all the data in your GPS so get the back up first before performing the hard reset.
If you want to try this, make sure you've backup the data in your unit before answering to Yes.
---------------
Reset procedure sets the unit to Factory settings on which the unit actually came to you.So all the sound and other settings get automatically set and unit mostly gets working in most of the cases.
---------
The procedure is as follows:---
In the Quick Start Manual of Garmin Nuvi 255w GPS, it stated that you can reset the unit by pressing the RESET button at its bottom. However, the RESET button is not found on some Nuvi 255w. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this
solution and show your appreciation.
Additional information in the Owner's Manual stated that if RESET button is not found, slide the POWER key and hold it for more than 8 seconds will do the same.
-----------------
The Hard reset Now:--Try this only if the above soft reset does not helps:---

I tried both 1 & 2 solutions but they did not work. I also checked the volume - turned it on and off and on again, decreased it to 0 then increased it bacl to 100 but that also did not work. Could the sound circuit have shorted out??? Should I send the unit back to the factory for repairs???
