Here is the service manual: http://elektrotanya.com/?q=showresult&megnev=AOC%20&megnev2=LM729%20&kategoria=&kat2=all

You will need test lamp to verify if it is the inverter or the lamp assemblies.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Problem with the risolution

Hi,

To my understanding, an AOC LM729 is capable of 1280 x 1024 and therefore should be able to display your preferred 1024x768 .

Perhaps you need to set the PC's Display Screen Refresh Rate to 75 Hz or lower (DisplayProperties/Settings/Advanced/Monitor).

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

AOC LM729 17" LCD Monitor - Manuel

I assume you only found the 4 mount screws in the back... You also need to take off the front silver edging - it pops off with some negotiating, but if you find the right spots and don't pry hard it will come off clean without too much difficulty. Then take out the screws that hold the screen inside and it should drop out.

Monitor problem

You are experiencing an inverter board failure. You will need to replace or repair the inverter. The inverter drives the CCFL lamps that illuminate the screen if the lamps draw to much current or components on the board are overheating it will shut down the backlights. Some monitors have cold solder joints on the toroidal coils of the inverter that causes this problem, very typical with HP monitors, If you are handy with a solder iron you may try just re-soldering board and replacing push-pull transistors for a few more years of use. Provide make and model and I can be more specific about probable cause and solution.
