I've just had a quick google for hp w2270, and all I can find, is a monitor. According to details listed for the monitor, it's already got built in speakers.
Now if there's a speaker cable from the monitor, then is should plug into a green socket on the back of your PC tower. There may also be a second green socket on the front.
If you've got a separate set of speakers, then they may plug into either the green socket or a usb port.
Look at the rear of the computer.
There will be different coloured jack plug sockets.
The speaker out is green and the mic. in is pink.
There may be other colours, these are for multi speaker (3.1 5.1 +) setups.
Your manual should give you a diagram

Try to use earphones, plug them in to phone audio connector....
try if it works..... if so, disconnect them and plug speakers.... and try again.... if doesn't work, go to audio advanced setup and check if speakers are not muted, or set up voicevolume level is too low. Play with that setup....
Also some computers can turn on or off speakers in Bios.
If problem will not be solved, try to use USB speakers
any computer speakers you are going to get from best buy or similar store will work with a desktop computer, it will plug into the green headphone jack on the back of the PC. the small PC speaker in the desktop can not be used for sound from in windows in most cases.
Your speakers are plugged into the wrong port? Most computers have at least a mic port and a speaker port, many also have front, rear, center, and subwoofer. Try playing a sound, then moving the connector to another port and trying again.
Are your new speakers plugged in? Is the volume on them turned up?
