The problem started with a pop sound, when I began to head food. Since then , the oven turns on with the timer buttons, the light comes on, the turntable turns, but there is no heat. Also, the unit now makes a louder cooking sound when turned on then previously....help.
I am mechanically apt, any idea of the price of a magnatron. Is it worth fixing, or should I replace .....i think the unit is 1999.....thanks.I am mechanically apt, any idea of the price of a magnatron. Is it worth fixing, or should I replace .....i think the unit is 1999.....thanks.

The magnatron unit has malfunctioned. You should be able to replace that unit if you're mechanically apt, although with the price of microwave ovens, you might just as well get a new one that's under warantee.
My personal opinion? for a 1999 product, I'd replace the microwave with one that's under warantee.
Finding and installing a magnatron... well you're on your own as far as warantee is concerned. Being an electronic device, most places won't even take them back if they don't work, and you won't get any guarantees from the manufacturer by installing it yourself.
My guess... a magnatron will run around $50 for a 600 watt and closer to $80 for a 900 to 1KW.My personal opinion? for a 1999 product, I'd replace the microwave with one that's under warantee.

I would strongly consider replacing the microwave oven, prices have dropped considerably. The problem you are describing is in the keypad controller board.
The magnetron may be arcing, get warm soapy water and remove all food particals from inside of microwave oven until spotless, and check the hood for bare metal.
This is a strong indicator the magnetron has failed "heats food" and is the heart of the system. If microwave oven is a few years old better to invest in new.
When you say that the microwave won't turn on, can I assume that you mean that the food does not heat up! If that is the case, the problem lies with the magnetron circuit. This circuit consists of the transformer, rectifier and the magnetron, the part that generates the microwaves to heat the food. If it is the magenetron, then it probally not worth fixing since the cost to purchase the magnetron is almost as much as a new oven. To diagnose if it is the magnetron that has failed, when you turn on the oven, do you hear a louder that normal hum or buzzing sound? If that is the case, then it means that the magnetron is shorted and needs to be replaced.
Hello, I had the same problem, and just fixed mine. Start by turning on your microwave (on mine, the light turned on and timer worked, but the fan nor the plate turned)... push the door upward and see if the microwave turns on... (mine did). so far so good. open the door and take the upper hinge cap off with flat head screwdrive. take the door off and place a small washer on the bottom hinge, put the door back on. your microwave should be good now. essentially, the door just needs to be pushed up a bit so it will work.
good luck, hope that works for you...
