This problem occurs because Windows Vista cannot distinguish between ambiguous hard disks.

In versions of Microsoft Windows Setup that are earlier than Windows Vista Setup, hard disks are marked with distinct values to distinguish them. However, this method of distinguishing hard disks is no longer supported because of the potential for data corruption on hard disks.

Do you have more than one hard drive connected to your computer?

If you have two hard drives, remove the second hard drive and continue with the installation.

If that does not work, try to format the C: drive while installing the Vista operating system.

You need to select the "format" option from "advanced" within Vista installation.

If you have an old copy of windows 98 or 95,I have in the past installed one of these and it repaired the disk while installing,then installed windows 7,you could also try a low levell format but would need an external enclosure or a live disk to run from or go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-vista/check-your-hard-disk-for-errors and do a checkdisk scan(do this at night may take all night and sometimes never finishes)the last one wont require reinstalling windows.

Dear! Delete your C drive and create again with the help of windows and then format and install Windows. Your problem will be fixed.

delete the partition and then formate it and reinstal the windows, after this run registry cleaner reg in out and a gud antvirus, i hope this will help u

of course you can format your laptop's hard disk. but you cannot do it while you are running windows. to format your hard disk and install a fresh copy of windows, you need to have 1) Windows XP CD Installer and 2) a valid cd key to complete your installation

How?

Load the CD Installer to your CD/dvd drive and restart your windows. When booting, your laptop recognize a bootable CD so it boots from there and not from your hard disk. Just follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.

If you have the windows install disk, just put it in and start a new install..there will be an option come up in the installation to format the drive.
If your laptop has a second hard drive listed that is very small that the recovery partition...go to it and run the recovery program

Wehn you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or 'del" key to enter in bios then check there your harddisk is detected or not.
Also check sata is disable.
then save settings and exit.
This error comes becasue of your harddisk is not detected proeprly .

Just go to Toshiba support web site Download the Storage Manager Driver for XP 32 then have an External floppy drive with formatted Disk ,install the drivers Files in the floppy connect the floppy drive put the XP sys CD Boot from the CD as in Solution #1 or by press on F12 tell choices boot screen popup select the CD then after that when the third party appear press F6 to chose the Driver for HDD to get recognized by the system. J

Replace the hard drive with a new one. IT takes a standard IDE 2.6" laptop drive - I would try newegg.com they have pretty good prices probably about $100 for a 120gb drive.

The hard drive is under the 3x4" cover on the bottomn of the machine.

Sounds like the hard drive is defective. Replace it and run the xp cd.
