If you are you able to turn the agitator by hand, then it is likely that something has failed. Bearings can and do fail without noise or residue. If you know what you are doing, then I suggest you dismantle the machine completely and find the part that has failed. If you do not know what you are doing, then find a repair centre that works on this make.
Hello Tabatha,
I see that you are having trouble with your washer portion agitating and spinning out. I suggest to give your appliance a hard reset. You will do this by either unplugging it switching the circuit breaker it is attached to, off for 3-5 minutes. Once the 3-5 minutes has passed, switch the circuit breaker back on. Turn the washer on. If you are still having trouble with it not agitating or spinning out, I suggest you contact your local authorized technician to come and diagnose the washer, to see why it will not agitate or spin.
GE washers are notorious for transmission leaks. Personally, I wouldn't spend much time or effort on a major repair of a 14 year old washer. Suggest you contact a local parts house and see if the upper seal is available as a kit. Other sites suggest that this transmission is no longer available new, and even then it's a $250 part. If you ruin one load of clothes with transmission oil, you're probably halfway to the price of a new one.
Sounds like you might have a bad coupler. Most of these washers are built by whirlpool and use the "direct drive" system so there is no belt. instead a coupler transfers power from the motor to the transmission. see if the machine agitates, if it doesn't, you have a bad coupler. This is relatively easy fix, but does have some complicated parts to it... If you want to try to fix it yourself, let me know and I will post detailed repair instructions.
HI It is very likely that the transmission needs to be replaced/repaired. Inside most top loading washer transmissions is a small part that lets the motor drive the transmission in either the agitation mode or the spin mode. When this part shifts back and forth to the two different positions for wash or spin. When it locks the transmission into the spin position, the motor and transmission can now spin the wash tub to help remove excess water from the clothes. When this lock breaks, the washer will still wash and agitate and the motor will still pump out the water in the washer, but without the spinning of the tub, clothes will not be damp dry enough to be put into the dryer.
The part itself isn't much money, but the problem is that the repair isn't easy for even a good Dyer to perform, as you have to remove the agitator, wash tub, tub seal boot, and the transmission from the cabinet just to get ready for the repair process.
IF you can even get the repair part for the broken transmission (difficult as most manufacturers only let authorized service dealers buy these sub-components these days), it will be VERY messy to disassemble the transmission and remove all the oil and broken metal pieces from the transmission lock part.and then completely clean out the inside of the transmission housing replace the gear assembly and put in the new lock piece, plus add back new, clean appliance trans oil and a new end build washer transmissions on. it is best to buy a new washer. Especially if your washer is more than 10-12 years old. Thanks for contacting fixya.com
You will need to replace the switch I am afraid. If I had your Model # I could get you the part # . If you would like to order a swtich, I can give you my web site address
I would appreciate if you would rate my prfomance here because I am new to this site. Any feed back on how I am doing would be helpful.
Thanks

Remove the agitator cap and the bolt in the middle that holds the agitator. Reach underneath the sides of the agitator and pull up. Try gently rocking it around as you pull, I'm sure it's going to be stuck pretty tight. Good luck!
If it wont spin or agitate, and you have a very slimey looking oil that looks like its been flung around the inside of the cabinet and all over the floor, then you have probably had a transmission go out on your unit. The problem is these transmissions are kinda expensive and take a little work to put in. Most dont replace due to cost, but they are available. Good luck!!!
