No picture (black screen) using a HDMI to DVI cable from Time Warner's Explorer 8300HD cable box to Hitachi 57swx20b. Using RBG component cables, picture is fine.

This problem is almost certainly on the 8300HD side of your setup.

You're using the HDMI-to-DVI cable to connect, and I see that the manual warns on the bottom of page 11 that some DVI connected HDTVs are incompatible to the signals that are output by the HDMI interface.
First thing to try - when you change the settings in the 8300HD, in the "General Settings > Audio", see if you have this problem with all of the possible selections, or if it's only with the "Dolby Digital" setting. Since the HDMI also contains the audio signal, it may be interfering with the DVI recognition in the TV.
OR - See if you still have this problem when turning the TV on first, then the 8300HD. Or vice-versa. The power-on order of the two devices may make a difference.
OR - With the TV on and with the 8300HD off, press the GUIDE and INFO buttons at the same time. Using the on-screen menu, verify that it is set to HD mode. Press the POWER button on the 8300HD when finished.
OR - Replace the HDMI-to-DVI cable with a PrPbY/V component cable, available at Radio Shack, Best Buy and other electronics stores.
One of these options should solve the problem. If not, you'll have to start sending e-mails to Sci-Atl and Samsung.
Hope this helps! ;)
Use the Time Warner remote and hit the settings button twice. Scroll down to "audio: digital out" and select HDMI. That solved it for me.
The only issue I have now is that I also have component sound outputs going from the cable box to a receiver. When I turn off the TV while the HDMI cable is hooked up to both the box and the tv the sound goes out to the receiver...
You need to make sure that the settings on your TV for the DVI connection are set properly. It sounds as if it is set to stretch or zoom. The reason the HD channels look great is that they dont zoom because the resolution fills up the entire screen without stretching.
I know you want to use your HDMI cables, but since you are going HDMI to DVI you are removing the benefit of the single cable since you still have to use audio cables. You are not going to get any appreciable difference between the setup yo uare using and the component (red, green, blue) cable.

Everything I've read on the web says cable box to tv connection must also use component (rgb) cables. The error is coming from the cable box (STB). All the Scientific Atlanta (SA) cable boxes seem have this Digital Rights Management (DRM) bug and the only way to be totally rid of the error is to replace the digital connection from box to the TV with an analog connection.
The model you mentioned does not have an HDMI input. Are you using a convertor from HDMI to DVI? If so there are several types of DVI cables/ inputs make sure you use the right one.
Try disconnecting the hdmI cable and the dvr box.
Connect the cable directly to the cable input.
Sometimes the dvr boxes will cause this problem
after you connect the hdmi cable.
Are you using a HDMI to DVI cable or are you using a HDMI to DVI adapter? Sometimes, though not on all products you have to go into the menu and select which out put your using for each source and whats going through it. You might need to go into your dvd player menu and tell it not to try to run audio through the cable. That way it's not trying to force a signal through the cable that cant be accepted by the TV. That might possible solve your problem for the DVD player. Let me know if it works Have a Great day
Thanks. How do you set the tv to dvi input? I cannot find any menu selections that allow me to select the video input source.
