Power Supply replacement

I have a 42inch Toshiba plasma that has been diagnosed with a bad pcb power supply. The shop wants 600$ to repair it.
I have looked up the part and I can buy it for 252$.

How hard is it to take the tv apart and locate and replace it in the tv?

  • Leww2636 Apr 07, 2008

Thanks for the assist. I guess you are telling me that the capasitors can set me on my a$$. If I dont ground them.

The one repair quote was 300 in labor alone. when you add the cost of the part 252 it makes it too costly. I can buy a new one fro 700.

It's not difficult, but it's dangerous. Your best bet is to look for a repair person right here on Fixya - just click on the link that says My Products above, and it's cake from there.
It's a quick process, and it shouldn't run you too much more than  the 252 you already spent... and you're saving yourself the risk of electrocution. Those parts are crammed in there like a game of Tetris.
Good luck!

We have a LG Plasma TV; 60PC1D and are having a problem with it. When we try to turn it on, it goes from red then white twice, then back to red and will not come on. Thank you

You can only hope that this is a power supply issue which can be determined by visual inspection. If capacitors in the power supply are bulging it can be repaired reasonably, otherwise, you are probably looking at the y-sustain and z-sustain pcb's. This is a very expensive repair. First, have someone check the power supply for bad capacitors, which you can usually see if they are bulging or domed. Then you can decide to repair or replace the set. A power supply repair should cost 150-250 at a reasonable shop. The other boards replacement would be 450-650 us dollars. I'm just trying to give you my best guess... for free. Good luck, Russmann.

Lg 42inch plasma tv clicks several times before turning on. Then it works fine until you turn it off and back on again. Then the same thing happens. This has just started to happen in last 2 weeks. Any...

You have bad capacitors on the Power Supply PCB. There's probably like 9 of them bad, if memory serves me correctly. I have a tutorial published on a Samsung repair involving capacitors. It's not identical, but the solution is similar. I think in the case of your TV, you'll be looking for 3300uF caps with swollen tops. If after looking over the tutorial you decide this isn't for you, get the TV to a repair shop. I highly recommend you stop watching it and unplug it until you get this fixed. I hope this was of some assistance.

No power to my Phillips 42 inch Plasma 42pf7321d/37, just a red blinking light

Most likely it going to be a power supply related problem. The red blinking light is a code for a TV tech to diagnose the problem on the power supply board itself or the board that regulates the power for the screen. Some manufactures call it a Backlight Inverter Board. A TV repair shop should be able to look at it for you and tell you which board is bad.

Power light on my Toshiba 50 in plasma keeps flashing and tv will not turn on. What can I do?

Normally, this happens when the TV detects a bad circuit board and goes into " Protection Mode ". Most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. It's possible that it maybe a bad capacitor or transformer on the power supply board. But, I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet. I can only make guesses with the symptoms.

You have a few choices:

1. You can try leaving the TV unplugged for 30 - 45 minutes so the TV can discharge and reset itself.
2. If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.

3. If you have some electronic experience, if you can find and purchase a Service Manual over the internet; It will help you diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists.Usually, cost under $20. And most cases the new part cost less than $15.

4. Pay a TV shop to do the repairs. It maybe costly, but get an estimate of how much they will charge. That way you can decide if it worth repairing or replacing the whole TV.

I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.

Gateway 42 inch plasma p42m303 6 blinks on power supply

I had the Same issue. on a 50PF9431D/37 set. Many Plasma Set's use a LJ44-00118A PS-505-PH Power supply from Samsung. Known to have this common problem. If you can, or have a friend that can Solder components?. Unplug your set remove the back panel & locate your power supply. It will be the PCB in the center of the set just above the Video/Audio connections. http://www.shopjimmy.com/power-supply-unit-lj44-00118a-from-philips-50mf231d-40.htm. Is a Link to a photo of the PCB. Make a note of the locations of all cable connections then unplug them all. Un-install PCB, Check all Fuse first. I believe their is 5 or 6 of them on the PCB. Then replace the two 3300uf 10v 105C Radial capacitors at C8060 & C8059. Look to see if the Caps are deformed and or split at the top. The location of the caps are in the Lower bottom edge of the PCB. A local shop may Carrie them if not, digi-key has them. Part # http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=493-1754-ND. Total cost was $7 with S/H.

Phillips plasma

Five blinks is a severe hardware failure supplys not working. Viper is down. You have atleast a bad power supply board could have taken out your sustain boards. If you are good with a meter you can measure voltages and see if just your power supply is dead. If you have never handled a multimeter you will need a tech and a power supply is not cheap..Power supply is about a 600 dollar board.
