Sony's STR-DE675 5.1 Channel Receiver - Speaker OFF problem

I just purchased a used, but good condition Sony STR-DE675 5.1 AV receiver. I have two Sony bookshelf speakers connected to the FRONT speaker jacks on the side. No matter how I try to power up the unit, the Speaker OFF (SP:OFF) continues to display.
1) No, no speaker wires are touching each other 2) Yes, I hear audio from the connected Sony tape deck and Sony minidisc player through the headphone jack of the DE675
What gives? I am STUMPED!
Thx!!

@dunnbiker: I have not one, but TWO .pdf files of the manual. Pressing the button does nothing.

There's a button that turns the speakers OFF right above the headphone jack.

Get the manual: retrevo.com

Testimonial: "@dunnbiker Very true on assumptions! I've tried everything the manual suggests. Right now, nothing is connected to the unit, but upon power up, I get the SP:OFF display (which is not seen in the DEMO mode). I will try the headphone jiggling idea and see what happens."

One can't make assumptions at my end. Are there other efforts you have tried but not mentioned?

If it THINKS there's a headphone inserted it turns speakers off. The internal contact that allows speakers to be on is probably a spring-tensioned normally-closed contact. Perhaps cycling the headphone plug in and out might exercize it enough to wear through corrosion.

Sony STR-DG710 center speaker makes no sound. Connections are good.

Sometimes these units have the ability to switch the speaker off and on. Look up the speaker settings in the manual.
As each channel in the unit will be separately driven the power amp for the center channel could have failed, but I think it's unlikely unless you have had problems with the sound on it before, or connected it wrongly causing a fault.

Sony str-de185 left channel very scratchy and poor; not speaker, wire, or connections

Could be an open resistor in the amp for that channel. Might have to have a pro look at it.

I have a Sony STR-DH810 7.1 channel receiver. Everytime I turned it on, it shows the channel for a while then turn to PROTECTOR the turn off by itself. How to fix this problem, thank you...

You must be having a power Amp output problem. There must be a short circuit in one of the amplifiers and that is triggering the protection mode to prevent speaker damage. You will need professional help for this since the circuit is complicated and so is the construction. Getting access to the under side of the circuit board for removal and replacement of the components is very difficult on all modern AV receivers.

Sony STR-DH510 Multi-channel AV receiver connected to cambridge soundworks ensemble IV w/ passive subwoofer: no sound from center channel during viewing, or during speaker level test- all other speakers...

The STR directs sound to the center as instructed by its speaker setup. You say the center does not work on calibration. Is it defined?

Prove another speaker does or does not work on the center output. Then we'll know if it's the receiver or the speaker ensemble that has the problem.

Have you checked the manual for this "
There is no sound, or only a very low-level sound is heard from the center/ surround. "?

I can't get the speaker B option selected on my Sony STR DH800 7.1-Channel Audio Video Receiver

If you're using the terminals for Surround Back (7.1) there is no Speaker B option.

See the notes on page 19 of the manual.

My Sony STR-DE135 reciever has sever distortion on the right channel speakers (A&B) no matter which input is selected. I can not find any obvious fault on the board. Any tips to help me fix it?

It sounds like your receiver may have a damaged output IC. I'm assuming that you've already tried a known good speaker on the right channel but if not, that would be a good idea. Also check and verify that the speaker wire is not damaged and that the terminals at each end are securely fastened.

Good Luck,
BB
