please verify if firmware of your receiver is up to date.

the newest version of GPSMAP 76CSx is Ver. 3.60, realised on Feb 18, 2008

if not, make upgrade either by WebUpdater application or download it direct from www.garmin.com

If he purchased it from a Garmin dealer, return it and have it exchanged for an unregistered unit.

if you post your e-mail add we can take this further as I may have a lcd screen that you can have for £20 + p&p

buy a broken one on ebay for parts and replace the outer cover. the same happened to me w/ a similar unit. good luck.

"72 Troubleshooting - Screen:
If the touch screen is not responding to your taps properly, calibrate the screen.
Turn the Nuvi off. Then, slide and hold the Power button to the left for about 30 seconds."

After you slide, and hold, the power switch to the left (ON position) for 20-30 seconds, the next screen that comes up should be the calibration screen, telling you to press the dots on the crosshairs.

I recommend using your finger to press the dots, just as you would in your vehicle. I thought I could be more precise using a stylus when I first got the device, but apparently that is what caused the problem in the first place.

FWIW -- I have the Garmin Nuvi 200 (not 200W).
I don't know why this problem is listed under 76Cx.

If you're handy with small tools, you can make a new screen using Lexan, a Dremel tool to shape it, and then glue it into place. You'll have to dismantle the unit first to get the broken screen out.

Either that, or send it in to Garmin for replacement.
