AL-1631 TONER LEAKING

We've had a few toner cartridges (Sharp brand) that keep getting toner all over the right side of the copies. We keep opening the copier up and cleaning it out and it happens again. There seems to be a buildup of toner on the cartridge, but I don't know how to get rid of it. Trying to wipe it off doesn't seem to work. Any other ideas?

I had same problem for 6 months. Water didn't run on desk, so my unit WAS level. So, I just pulled out toner & drum and vacuumed up & sprayed air everywhere to clean up, then I made sure everything was tight (including side door where the little wire thing you have to clean occasionally with little green plastic square (supplied w\copier). That piece on door needed to be up and as far back as it can go (It does move slightly in and out - make sure it is IN). I then changed the drum (put same cartridge back) - only this time I made sure everything was really in place tightly. Not sure which fix did the trick, but it stopped leaking, and I've since copied over 400 pages since then and also had to change the cartridge after about 100 pages.
PS I also vacuumed underside the copier unit with tray out, and inside the paper tray as well. I've unsuccessfully cleaned everything up like this before, but 1st time I've changed drum, and 1st time I made sure EVERYTHING was tightly in it's place. Let you know if it starts to leak again. Hope this is helpful to someone out there.
Shari.
PPS. I am NOT using OEM drums or cartridges, but clearly THAT was NOT MY problem

The one thing that will cause that, and has been something I have seen more than once. Make sure the machine front to back, is the machine sitting level? Take a line level and place it on the document glass front to back and see if the machine is level.
What happens is the toner and developer work to one end of the cartridge and it overwhelms that end. The other problem, is the cartridges being stored on end and not flat.
The ink then is all on one side and will not be able to stay in the cartridge when run..

the problem in your machine is on the drum unit there is a arching on the mc unit.located in the upper portion of the drum unit.if you have an old drum unit try to install it again just for testing.and check if ther is a dumping toner again.

I do I remove the old drum in a sharp AL 1631 copier?

You have to open the door on the right side of the machine first, then you can open the front door. Remove the toner cartridge and then you can remove the drum unit.

Toner on the side of paper when copying

If you are using refilled toner cartridges then your toner cartridge may be leaking or the waste toner tank on the toner cartridge may be leaking. The other cause and more likely is the drum cartridge is leaking toner. I would recommend removing both cartridges. Then hold each 1 at a time over several sheets of clean white paper. Tap on the cartridges and see if any toner falls out of them. These cartridges are normally sealed and should not leak much if any toner. If toner falls out of either cartridge you will need to replace that cartridge.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

My al-1631 gives blank copies. just replaced toner. no warning lights of any kind. no message lights. it just prints out blank paper. could it be the drum? can't find instruction manual. purchased...

Was the copier working fine before you changed the cartridge? If so I think your cartridge is the problem. If it started making blank copies right after you changed it. If this is not the case the first thing I would say is it is not the drum. Try opening and closing the right side door. There are contacts in the door that will cause blank copies. I have had several customers do this and it fixed the problem. You can also try pulling out the toner and then pull the drum unit partially out and re-seat it. Then re-install the toner.

Sharp AL-1631

Several things can cause this problem; The drum cartridge is not being cleaned properly or there is a problem with the toner cartridge . Take out the drum cartridge and inspect it for any signs of the defective image. If that doesnot solve the problem, then Call a tech.
