I have an 8 month old Eureka bagless model 5893. It recently started to collect dirt in the filter system instead of in the canister. What could be causing this?
The canister has a filter as well. It needs to be replaced or cleaned. A damaged canister filter will feed dirt into the HEPA filter. (and the motor)
An improperly installed filter can allow dirt to bypass the canister filter and collect in the HEPA filter.
I suggest a new canister filter and then clean it carefully every week.

Eureka! I had this same problem, and after making sure the cannister was connected properly, I finally ended up removing the hose from the back (the clear part snaps right out and back in)...and there was a large wet one wrapper lodged in there. It works like a charm now!
Actually this vacuum does not have a filter inside the dirt canister. If the lid to the dirt canister is not properly on canister , causing a slight gap to form at top of dust cup. It will cause alot of dirt to collect up in the foam filter, which is above where the dirt canister is. There is a clear door that the foam
