Your SAP audio function is on. Look on your remote or in the TV menu for SAP or MTS. There are 3 settings, Mono, Stereo, and SAP... set it to Stereo. I hope this was helpful, best wishes.

One channel muted until the volume is turned up

This problem is usually dur to some corrosion in the speaker relay. If the relay can be opened, burnish the contacts and you should be OK. The higher volume creates a higher voltage that can "jump the gap" so to speak. Once the connection is made it will remain. That is why lowering the volume will work.

Carver Sound Problems

your going to need this place to download the remedy's for your system http://www.euras.com/repair_tips_1/CARVER/AV505/AV505_CARVER.htm

if it is not working then there is another serious problem , and it could be the amp IC or the volume IC but tests will need to be done to determine what is causing the failure , but it does sound like amp IC as a suspect since the rear were not even working , did the volume seem different when turning it up or down before the center quit or after the center quit?

Amp volume problem

Sounds like you have a bad or dirty gain potentiometer. Try turning the gain up and down with the volume at a moderate level. If u hear static, it is possible the potentiometer is bad or dirty. Replace with one of the same value and see if that solves your problem.

Phones 1-2 has both channels coming out of it

Had the same problem and fixed it today. It is the mute button. Whem you change from 1-2 to 3-4 if the mute button for 1-2 does not activate you will get the sound from 1-2 thru 3-4. Just change the setting and you are away. worked for me.

Channel 1 static and lack of performance

The potentiometer (volume control) is probably dirty. Open the amp and find the "pot" connected to that volume control. You should be able to see small opennings where you can spray electrical contact cleaner inside. Give the knob a few turns and try it out. If it gets better but not perfect, repeat. If several attempts don't eleminate the problem, the pot will most likely need to be replaced. Contact cleaner can be found at any electrical supply store such as Radio Shack. Be sure to use one that says no or zero residue. I use a product called Electrosolve.

Channel 2 volume is very low

You can check if channel 2 is blown by switching around your RCA plugs. If you are using the speaker wires as high power inputs you can change them. I.E. swap the left channel with the right one. I assume you checked the gain control on the amp. If channel 2 works with channel 3's inputs then its your head unit or the wiring. If you are lazy take the amp to a car audio store and ask them to bench test it for you. Hack
