See attached pic from Service Manual for Yamaha AX-396.

You don't say anything about your passive speaker, only thing that I understand you have a Yamaha AX-396 witch have an Power output of 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms (stereo)! That means working great with your passive speaker!!!

One of the possible reason could be electrolityc capacitors in power stage.Every chaneel has 1 or more capacitors the value of woch is probably 10 000 mf/63v - check them out

Needs to be serviced. Could be a bad output transistor. Check the speaker wires and all other connections.

Think aux sockets are line IN, on PC line IN too. Try finding line OUT on amp.

The bass and treble controls (as well as volume) have no effect on the recorded output if you're using the traditional jacks a tape deck would use. Only PRE-OUTS get massaged by sound controls.

Even if you DID affect the recorded signals, WHY are you using such exaggerated settings? Or was it by mistake?

In theory, passing the modified output back through the same controls (set to Minimum this time) would undo most of the unwanted effect. Assuming their precise and mirror image for gain and loss.

Set them both to a neutral position (straigth up?). If this sounds good to you, let it stay like this.

Is the remote the fault or the machine. I would try new batteries I know this is obvious but even new batteries can be faulty. One way to check if remote is sending out a signal is to use it near a radio on mw it will cause interference, check battery terminals are clean and not had caroded batteries inside. not much more you can do if none of the buttons work but change the remote, you can probably get one on the internet ,

Does this model (yamaha) have "pre-out" connectors on the back panel?
If so, use those to go to the Denon

This problem is usually dur to some corrosion in the speaker relay. If the relay can be opened, burnish the contacts and you should be OK. The higher volume creates a higher voltage that can "jump the gap" so to speak. Once the connection is made it will remain. That is why lowering the volume will work.

Have you tried contacting Yamaha itself?
Or alternativly a Yamaha service center. They might supply you with the part for a fee.

Hi I not speak good English but y think what you have a failure,is not a cuestion of cooled, because its posible a the output of your amplifier is damage, a question for you ¿You are qualified for repared a electronics equipment? if you answer is not, you most give you amplifier to an technician

a good hifi tech would note... I am in /Australia and could take care of the problem. Or rate me "FixYa"and get back to me here and i will take you through a diagnostic process
