If you have the HP Computer then the Recovery has two option one is Destructive Recovery (Data Loss) and Non - Destructive (Data Back-up). You just need to Press F11 as soon as the computer restart. Then follow the on screen instruction and choose the option accordingly.

Won't post at boot up. post light flashes, no video

Hello there: here is a list of things to try
first make sure that you monitor is working try it on a nother computer if you have axcess to one
when the computer boots up is there any beeps please let me know

you may also want to turn off the computer and open the case and remove the powersupply harness that goes to the motherboard then press the power button for 1 minute to release any esd that may have built up then reinstall the harness to the motherboard.

ensure that all of the cables are securly connected unplugging and reinstalling them can help. also since the case is open this will be a good time to clean out all of the dust and critters that may be hiding in there

if you have a removable video card and if you can get a nother card to test with please try it
if not remove the card restart the machine after you hear the beeps turn off the computer reinstall the card and than reboot the machine ok please try each of these and keep me informed how this goes
best regards mike

I have a gateway laptop model MA7and it wont start up.

It is not a hard drive issue. If hard drive is a problem system wont boot till motherboard processor. Try to reinstall your OS. It will fix your issue.

Swapped hard drive into new casw and now it wont boot up

This is due to a hardware conflict.
The system drivers on the hard drive are for the old mother board and devices,You will have to reinstall OS while it is install on the new mother board,The computer cannot boot to a drive that is loaded to another system unless all the devices and drive are identical.

System wont boot up

Have you done any setup to the new hard drive? Any new hard drive will come with no data on it. This means you will have to reinstall windows onto the new hard drive, or copy windows from your old hard drive(if it still boots up) using the CD that came with the hard drive. If your hard drive didn't come with the software, post which hard drive you have, and I can give you the link to download it.
Try and find the Windows CD's that came with your computer, and use them to reinstall it. If this was a name brand computer (like dell, or HP), then it will have come with some CD's (usually). Sometimes the restore is built into the old hard drive :-)
If this was a clone computer, you should have a legal copy of windows that was given to you.
