You don't give any details or specifications of either your computer or its Audio/Sound Card/Chip. Please feel free

If by
"volume", you mean Audio, then this sounds like an Audio/Sound Driver
fault or corruption.
When
Audio/Sound Drivers are either not installed or the Audio/Sound Card/Chip is
Disabled or Uninstalled in Device Manager, the Windows Volume and Mixer
Controls can become Disabled until the Drivers are installed or repaired
Reinstall
the Windows XP Audio/Sound Driver for the brand, type and model number of your
computer from its Driver and Utilities CD. If you have no CD, download the Drivers and Utilities from
the Support & Downloads Page of the computer manufacturer's website.
Since I do
not know the details of your computer. I cannot, as I would otherwise have
