Dishwasher not draining

Dishwasher working fine for 6 months when it was installed, all of a sudden, it won't drain. Obviously something is blocking the drainage pipe going into the disposal. What is the best way to clear this?

Food particles left on the dishes suddenly !!!!!!!!!

well this answer takes the cake, for about 3 months I've had problems with my dishwasher leaving "grit" on my dishes. After taking the inside drain area apart of my dishwasher, running a qt of CLR, gallon of vinegar, and any other product that someone mentioned or I saw in the store, THIS IS THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM.

There are 2 screws at the top of the dishwasher that hold it in place under the counter, well when the builder installed it, they only put 1 screw in. Hence the dishwasher after 6 years got pushed back ever so slightly on 1 side and obviously was "pinching" the drain hose. Pulled it forward, put a screw in, to lock it in place and it appear to be working like new.

I am also one that thought that the upper arm was getting water, well the upper arm rotates alternately with the bottom and its doing its job as well. Good luck everyone - Jo. Calgary, Alberta "Happy Stampeding"

Whirpool built-in puddle of water in bottom, food on drain

see this causes and proceed according. God bless you
Belt, Water Pump Although few dishwashers have a water pump belt, if the dishwasher won't drain there might be a worn or broken water pump belt. After removing the lower kick panel the motor can be seen in the front, the water pump belt is on the bottom of the motor.

Drain Pump If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain pump might be defective. Test the pump motor with an Ohm meter. Drain pumps are not repairable, if it's defective it will need to be replaced.

Drain Impeller The drain impeller is attached to the pump and pushes the water out of the dishwasher, through the drain tube and into the garbage disposer or drain line. If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain impeller might be broken or worn out. Replace both the impeller and seal at the same time.

Drain Solenoid Kit If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain solenoid kit might need to be replaced. The drain solenoid is an actuator that opens a flap to allow the water to drain.
Drain Valve The drain valve can get clogged with debris and should be cleaned out if the dishwasher won't drain. If it seems clear of debris but won't actuate, it will need to be replaced. The drain valve is not repairable Pump and Motor Assembly If the dishwasher won't drain, the pump and motor assembly might be defective. If the motor runs during the drain cycle, check for a blockage in the drain line. If the motor won't run during the drain cycle or if it just hums when it should be running, the pump and motor assembly might need to be replaced.

Clogged or Improperly Installed Garbage Disposer If the dishwasher won't drain and the garbage disposer was installed recently, the installer might have forgotten to knock out the drain plug from this disposer. All garbage disposers are sold with a solid plug in the drain tube for situations where a dishwasher isn't connected. However, if the dishwasher is connected, the plug will need to be removed. If the disposer wasn't replaced recently, remove the dishwasher drain hose from the disposer and clean out both the fitting on the disposer and the end of the drain hose. These are the most common places to find an obstruction if the dishwasher won't drain.

Check Valve If the dishwasher won't drain the check valve might be stuck closed. The check valve is a small plastic device which prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the valve gets stuck closed, it will prevent the water from draining. The check valve is the device that the drain hose is attached to on the dishwasher.

Check Ball If the dishwasher won't drain the check ball might be stuck. The check ball is a small plastic ball in the check valve which prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the ball gets stuck, it will prevent the water from draining also. The check valve is the device that the drain hose is attached to on the dishwasher.

Water in dishwasher, will not pump out. Noise when machine is turned on

Hi

Dishwasher not draining issue usually occurs due to kinked drain pipe, clogged drain filter or drain pump. Check the drain hose for any visible clogging, remove if present. If no visible lint is present then remove then turn off the dishwasher and remove the drain hose and check for any visible clogging. If still not visible then the drain filter or drain pump is clogged and you'll need to clean the drain filter and drain pump. Also, check for any food pieces stuck near the pump impeller.
Please note that dishwashers don't drain out the complete water such that heating element doesn't overheat.

Hope this helps... Please post back for any further assistance.

Diswasher is not draining. The bottom is full of water. What is the problem, how do I correct it?

always when posting make and model are very helpful. most likely there is something blocking the drain ports on the basin. the most common article would be the clear wrap of a tv dinner.. or something like that .. or a paper that was surrounding a can or bottle that you put thru your dishwasher cycle. most often it is reocmmended not to wash your recycling in the dishwasher as this is a common problem that can ruin your machine. is it new ? is this the first time using it? who installed it. would be my next questions and if it is any of the above then chances are someone didnt uncap and port for drainage... if you have used it before and now all of the sudden it is blocked then it is something like a paper or clear plastic blocking your drain ports at the base in the middle of the dishwasher you will see a grate with holes if they are blocked it will not drain.

Replaced disposal and now dishwasher isnt draining

It sounds like you've done everything fine. I would disconnect the dishwasher drain line from the disposal, have a bucket ready and see if it will drain. It's possible that there is a plug or something else left in the disposal opening that is blocking the water. If the dishwasher won't drain with the hose off of the disposal, there is a problem with the dishwasher that has nothing to do with your disposal installation. Hope this helps and good luck!

It's still full of water !

HI. check the following areas for fualts.

1. Air gap / Drain hoses
If there is an air gap (located in the sink, near the faucet), check to see if it is clogged. Unscrew the top cap and see if there is anything blocking inside. Note: If there is no air gap installed, the dishwasher might not drain properly.

If the drain hose is clogged, the dishwasher would not drain. If there is an air gap installed, it is very common that a hose going from the air gap into the garbage disposer is clogged. Remove and clean the hose. Make sure to reattach the hose before starting the dishwasher.

Note: If you recently had a garbage disposer installed, it is common to overlook removing the drain plug.

2. Broken belt
Some dishwasher models use a belt to drive the pump. Replace the belt if found broken.

Note: Sometimes the belt would just come off the pump. Even though it might not be broken, it is recommended that you replace the belt, because it is probably too stretched out.

3. Pump
Some models have two impellers inside the pump - one, wash impeller, takes care of the wash cycles, the other, drain impeller, drains the water out. If the drain impeller is broken (broken blades, shaft), the dishwasher would not drain. Replace any broken pump components.

4. Drain solenoid
Some models (for example most GE dishwashers) use a drain solenoid to drain water out. Sometimes the solenoid gets stuck, preventing the water from draining out. Try to free up the solenoid. If unsuccessful, you might have to replace the pump assembly.

5. Motor
If the motor is stuck, it is sometimes possible to free it up by manually spinning the motor.

Replace the motor if defective.

6. Timer
Replace if defective (note: uncommon problem).

Fisher&Paykel DW60 drain pump is blocked.

Check the drain hoses by removing the dishdrawers from the machine and pulling on the hoses. I installed a Fisher Paykel DD602 about a month ago and the bottom drawer was not draining. I removed the drawer and freed up the drain hose and the machine worked fine.
